What to look for in an LCD??

Hi guys. I'm in the market for a 17" LCD but I don't know what to look for. All the lingo like response time and VESA compatible and what not means nothing to me right now. Can anyone clear up all the LCD keywords for me? What is the BEST of the BEST out there right now in terms of technology (not brand names) ? Thanks a bunch!
