What to look for in a road bike?

Anyhow, I'm searching for a cheap road bike on CL, which isn't really that hard. There are a lot of them around here, but before I go out and visit people, what exactly should I be looking for? I've never bought a road bike before, much less a used one. I'm not asking much, just that the bike get me to class quickly and is hopefully fun enough to take out for a spin on the weekends.
