I'm currently using an X850XT. I would like to know the best route to take in buying my next video card. I will more than likely be purchasing in late Q2 or early Q3 (May to August).

There are too many delays with the R600 (maybe there is something wrong or they are really taking the time to get everything perfect, I don't know). Anyway...

I kinda prefer Nvidia to be honest but I will always buy based on a best-bang-for-buck basis.

So, what do I do?!!

Based on all the leaked info, what will be the best hi-mainstream card at the best price?

8600GTS, 8800 GTS (320), 8900GS, X2600XT.........????

Why not just buy a EVGA 8800gts 320mb now and use the step up program to upgrade in 3 months. If not just sell it. I really don't see any game that system that won't play thats out now though with your x850xt .

I was hoping that my next video card upgrade would be to a DX10 card and it would coincide with the release of Crysis (so I can enjoy it in full detail). Anyway.....

Are you saying that my X850XT is still "good"?

I haven't set up the new stuff yet so I don't know how it will run with the C2D but it should be a lot better. If its still "good"...how long will it last me until I REALLY need to upgrade??

For gaming your system will match mine. Plus your new cpu will help alot with minimum fps, so you won't get any slowdown with many objects on your screen. I run most games at 1280x1024 med res ,med settings just fine. I say give it a shot and if you don't like it upgrade.

I run my games at 1024x768 (17" CRT). If it helps as a comparison.....

My Pentium D 915 @ 3.36GHz gave me 60-70 FPS in FarCry with everything maxed (even water on Ultra, 4xAA 8xAF).
I was getting 40-80 FPS in F.E.A.R. with everything on medium.

What you think.......??

Yeah right... I have the same card and it's quite behind modern games. I have to tone down quite a bit on oblivion, can't even use advanced lighting at the minimum setting in STALKER, and that's all without AA or AF.

Nobody knows what'll be out by then. Stuff changes so often that it's best to just wait a few months and see if anything new comes out. If there's no word on new cards then just buy the best that's out ATM and sell if something comes out right afterwards.

if you were planning on waiting then that is what you should do.

things will be changing enough in may-june with releases by nvidia of more dx10 cards plus ati's entry into the fray. it is too early to say what to get now if you are buying it then since more detailed info is needed.

if you can get ati and nvidia to talk more in detail that works too :)

Well, what I think is that you should hold on to your "mid-ranged" card since it is "good enough" to hold you through till the new cards come out.

So...it'll last you a few more weeks, hah!

I guess you guys are right. Moving up now to a Conroe should breathe some more life into my gaming so I should be fine for the next few months. And it will give me a chance to get together more money so that I can really get something worthwhile.

Right on target!

Now, I know this is somewhat irrelevant but...

How much $ do you make, Cheex?

Might help us decide on what you should do next! :p

Or maybe not...

I don't make much because I'm a University student that only works part-time. So it is a bit hard to say what my budget will be in the next few months but all I know is that I'm going to want something really good this time. (I also need to buy another 1GB stick of memory to dual channel).
