Hi all.
I have just checked out my mums computer and realised that it only has 256MB of RAM. I want to upgrade it for her so it runs a little better.
The CPU is a P4 northwood 2.4gGHz FS400.
The ram in it at the moment is a stick of PC2100 256MB and the motherboard has two DDR slots that can handle up to PC2700 2GB not dual channel.
I don't think it would be a good idea to overclock because she doesn't need it and if anything goes wrong I won't be here to fix the problem. This means that the FSB will be staying at 100MHz.
I would like to know if it would be ok to put in a 512MB stick of PC2700 in the other slot. Would this be the best choice for a cheap upgrade or would the extra MHz that this RAM can handle not do anything for performance because of the FSB being at 100MHz. She can only afford 512MB.
Another question is would it help to put the 512MB stick in slot 1 and the 256MB stick in slot 2, or does the order not matter?
If anyone has any thoughts about this or any suggestions of what would be a more suitable and affordable upgrade, your help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
