It's recommended that you eat protein prior to lifting weights and then immediately afterward (within 15 minutes) to see the most benefit from it.

A small protien/carb meal be fine just before the gym, but make sure you eat a high protien/ low carb meal to support muscle recovery. I always have a protien shake immediately after the gym then eat something about an hour after that

my friend (excercise science major) told me to eat pasta right before a workout, because it breaks down fast and gives you the extra power to work out harder.

I think pasta has too much carbs for a post workout meal. I would recommend pasta a couples hour before for long distance runners and other athletes who require lots of energy. But for working out you really shouldn't load up with carbs like that

Before = 4 slices of toast with 8 slices of turkey. Or pasta. Just don't eat too much of it as its heavy if you eat too much and stays in the stomach too long.

After = Cambodian 3 course meal or other meal or chinese takeaway at parents shop or bowl of plain bowl rice + vegetables + quarter chicken skinless + fruits after and later during that day.

Make sure you drink plenty of water also.

Since I want to lose weight, I eat very light.

For muscle, One or two table spoons of peanut butter will do good for muscle gain. Get your Carbs and Protein in two bites.

Or if you want some easy to burn carbs - go get some Chinese food. Lo Mein and Shrimp. Just don't get anything fried of course.
