The improvement is staggering. I can play AC4 in 3x1080p eyefinity with settings turned way up! With the FX-8350, I was barely able to do the same at 1x1080p.

But... the stock cooler can't keep up with it and it just shuts off after about 20 mins. My Phanteks can't get here fast enough.....

Are you running stock or overclocked? The stock cooler should be able to keep up with stock easily, even up to a pretty stout overclock. Might want to confirm you seated it properly, especially if running stock.

Running stock clocks. I took a quick look at it last night to see if I had installed it correctly. It looks proper, but I really just did a quick take. Tonight I'll be reseating it, but regardless I'm not too worried about it right now with the new cooler on the way.

There's definitely something wrong with my stock cooler. It can't cool worth anything. two threads of prime95 cause temps over 100C after two passes per thread.

It is not a problem with the case airflow. I have three intake and three exhaust fans running in my Corsair Air 540. Disappointing though, since I basically can't do anything with this cpu until the new heatsink arrives. Even then, I'm nervous I just have a bad chip.

I did reseat and ensure the heatsink was attached correctly tonight. No change.

Bummer. I knew the stock cooler was bad, but I didn't know it was this bad. Really disappointing.

The weird thing is that it only hits 2000 rpm tops. Is that normal? My AMD heatsink would hit far closer to 5000...

Edit: did some more googling and i guess this is entirely normal behaviour. What a joke....

there is nothing wrong with the intel stock cooler or the 4790k or the installation.

a 4790k is a factory overclocked 4770k. intel should had included a better cooler for this particular cpu.

just patiently wait for the phantek. on big air - you have about another 200mhz left of overclocking.

Not sure entirely what you mean... I haven't OC'd a thing yet....

I had a similar shocking improvement coming from my old AMD FX-8150 to my new Intel Core i5 4670.

Glad I switched.
