So I was planning on getting a gaming PC this summer, building it myself.

Anyways I was deciding on whether to get either the

  • GTX 480
    or
  • ATI 5970

Also any word on if Nvidia is making a dual GPU to counter the ATI 5970?

Yes there is GTX 470 X2 Coming out at some point. Should be a faster than the 5970. If money is not an option go with the 5970 (AKA The Beast) . My 2 cents...

You can't go wrong with the 5970. If you buy a motherboard capable of SLI and Crossfire you can at least upgrade if you need too (Add another card). But either GTX 480 or a 5970 should hold you over for awhile. GTX 480 in SLI is a great scalable monster!!! And you will be able to cook your family breakfast on your computer while running benchmarks!

The choice is quite obvious really. If you want the faster card and can afford it, buy it. that would be the 5970.

Keep in mind that a single GTX480 will be free of multi-GPU problems.

Afaik there aren't any official plans for a GTX 470 X2. The one Galaxy was showing was a non-spec prototype part that had no plans for actual production. I could stand corrected of course.. but from what I've read, no 470x2 :(

You know, I've heard about that for years and years now, those comments even stopped me from trying it a couple times, but since I've gone to Xfire I've not experienced any of those problems. :\

It's just gotten a lot better/more mature now, I suppose.
