Hello,

I'm planning on ordering some parts for my new computer sometime today. However, I am having a VERY hard time convincing my parents that it safe to order off of certain sites, such as Newegg and ZipzoomFly. They keep saying that we could get "hacked", etc. I told them that hundreds of thousands of orders are placed each month. I just can't convince them.

I'll give you an example of how ignorant my mom is about this situation. She said, "I have seen a thing on Action News 5 about hackers who drive up in your street and access your internet and personal info". Keep in mind, we don't even have WiFi, so this isn't even an issue!

I've shown them Reseller Ratings, etc, to no avail. Can someone give me some convincing words that I can tell them? I have the latest security updates, firewall, etc running...

Thank you very much.

If its her credit card then you should heed her wishes.

If its your credit card then you should be able to do what you wish.

(Her mind is made up - you cannot change it.)

Education is all you can do.

Even if your account info was stolen, which is about a 1/1,000,000 chance, you would only be liable for about 50 USD anyway.

Ahaha yes "technophobia"... I suggest just going to a bank/post office and getting a mail order to pay with.

There should be encryption logos on all the sites, just show those to her, see if that works. Your parents sound like a tough crowd though.

They sound like my dad about 4 years ago when I ordered a P3 800E system. He almost kicked my @SS. But ever since then when all the parts showed up he's been ordering all kinds of crap online. hehe.

...

Hey, I just thought about this. Have your Mom or Dad, or even you with their permission, CALL the place and place an oder over the telephone.

Kind of a hassle, but hey, if it gets you your stuff...

Register for Paypal and pay through them. Then your mom won't have to worry about the credit card stuff.

I'm not sure that would work for him. I think his parents are scared of someone getting the information off of HIS computer.

That's why I suggested the phone order, that way the CC info is never even typed into the computer.

Well, good news. I called my uncle, and he has offered to let me order through him. He is the only other person in my family that is actually tech savvy.

I'm sure you can call and order over the phone which I'm sure your mom would feel safe doing. If not, I think you're out of luck since it appears that she has made up her mind.

If you have a drivers license or a bank account at just about any bank you can apply for a debit card which works just as well as a credit card for placing orders. I got mine I think during my junior (?) year and have bought tons of crap online. I never had much of a problem with my parents as my dad is a tech geek/engineer and was always wasting our family's pay checks on cool new toys, but I didnt want to rely on my parents on a financial level. Either way, this is my advice to you. It's easy and takes only a few minutes and you usually get your card within a week. Helps alot in real life as well as you no longer have to carry cash on you.
