You download a torrent in open it with a torrent client, such as BitTorrent, or my personal favourite, uTorrent. That client will then connect to other users and download parts of the file. But, I must make this clear; in no way is discussion of pirating software, movie or music allowedo n htese forums. I can only hope you're downloading something that is freely distributed.

In deed it goes to a folder. Also, it is a good idea to give back to the torrent, and leave the file uploading for other users for a little while (This is called ' seeding ')

It should ask you where you want to save it when you open it in the client. As Ned Flanders said below, it's a good idea to let it seed for others. Sharing is caring.

Is this the same deal as what Limewire does when you DL a file except it's not automatic?

It's automatic, they're just saying that you should leave the torrent program open for a while after you're done downloading to contribute back to the swam. If possible you should achieve at least a 1:1 ratio.
