What to do with this Sun box

Purchased it like 2 months ago off ebay, but haven't touched it ever since. Turned it on once, and that was about it.
been too busy with school. It seems a lot of places are asking for solaris experience, so I figure I mind as well buy a
sparc system and play with solaris 8.

what the heck should I do with it? i have three other systems running linux, bsd, and windows 2000. got apache, dns,
AD and email running already.

First, to see some system specs would be nice. That might help in determining what specifically you can and can't do with the box.
Anyway, I'd suggest maybe ftp, NFS, or samba file server (or all 3 at the same time). Of course, I have no solaris experience at all, so you'll have to ask someone else for help if you want to set it up that way. 🙂

If you wanna learn some useful Solaris(or rather, *NIX) stuff on that Solaris box, install Solaris 8, and try to get stuff like NIS/NIS+, LDAP, DiskSuite, etc running.

Allways good to know that stuff if you intend to work with Solaris in the future.

Of course, like jliechty said, specs would be nice, running all that on an old Sparc1 or something probabaly wouldn't be too speedy 😉

Well, a fileserver is probably out of the question with that small HD (unless you can upgrade it), so perhaps you could run apache on the sun box, and put a fileserver on one of your linux/bsd boxen which may have more HD space.

This is what I need to do!

Just so ya know, NIS(+) and LDAP are going to be a little hard to tell if you have it working properly... mostly they are used for environments where you have many boxes or a few with many users. Also I doubt that you could get much to work well with your other boxes. I know there's a Linux port of the nis client tools, but I don't know about BSD and definately not W32.

I did get a rh7.2 box into our NIS+ directory, but some things just didn't work right, and I had a sun SSE helping me with the sun side. If you do try tho, be careful with the system times 😉 I'll explain if you want.

You could use it for a database server running a backend for your web server or something... I know MySQL runs well, and I think you could get oracle 8i personal edition for it.

Out of curiosity, what's your CPU speed on that bad boy? If it's below 300(296) be afraid. a 400 or 440 would be nice 😉
