Have a gigantic Note 3. Although I like to think I'll use it as dashcam once in a while and maybe a suction/dash mount would be ok, I am considering the vent or cd-slot mount types because at least then the phone is easily reachable. Are there any particularly good vent or cd-slot mounts? I was looking at a few on amazon and they seem REALLY bulky. Do you find that it blocks access to the console too often? Any particularly neat/different ones to point out?

Really no substitute for something like a vehicle specific mount with a RAM mount or similar on it.

This isn't what you asked for, but i bought: http://amzn.com/B009GSI0MM

Works great. My last one had a sticky pad thing that started leaving residue, then started falling off. I have a S2 with a larger battery, and this thing holds it well. No flex or bounce at all. My wife's iphone 4s doesn't move, either. Your Note3 weighs 28 grams more than her 4s, don't know if that will make a difference.

I've had the Mountek nGroove CD slot mount for about two years now. It's solidly-built and the adjustable spring-loaded grips give a firm hold. I'd recommend it.

To answer your original question about blocking access to dash controls, I personally don't find it obtrusive. Most of the buttons it blocks are for functions that I rarely need to access (clock setup, audio settings). Not having something in my line of sight is worth losing easy access to some rarely-used buttons, IMO. I'll grab a pic of my setup when I go to lunch so you can get an idea.
