i think we have this huge prison population we can use for productive purposes. so they live in a cell all day and sometimes eat. how about putting them to work?

Some of them are put to work.

I saw a prison gang working on a road not far from here just yesterday.

i think all of them should be put to work. except for those really violent ones. those we should put on pay-per-view fights

I agree.

The problem is finding something besides stamping license plates that private industry is not already doing for profit.

Then we have the Unions who lobby hard against it....

I would ship all our garbage to a central area where prisoners would manually extract recyclables and the remaing trash then could be burned or buried in a landfill.

Id we could only remove the politics from it...

The problem is, when you put prison gangs to work, you have to be careful that it isn't taking jobs away from honest citizens. Cleaning highways is a good idea, but there are not enough highways to clean for the ammount of prisoners.

Wow. I actually agree with Tom on this one.

Processing garbage is good.

Also, they should have bands of 20 prisoners with one guard continuously cleaning the streets, planting trees, hedging bushes, renovating abandonded property, basicly anything that needs to be done, but is not getting done due to a lack of $$$.

Imagine living is a green, sparkling clean city, while goverments save money! (I think each prisoner costs about $50 000/year here in canada).

Actually I thought there were some talk about it a while ago of doing just that. But do you trust prisoners going thru your trash with some of your personal info?

<< They do work in fact the US prison system is one of the largest corporations in America.
They make a ton of money and squeeze out legit buisiness cause their labour cost are so low.
>>

That is right! There is a huge Indutrial-Prison Complex... Did you know they are sometimes put to work answering phone calls for companies like AT&T and other big corporations?

I think you have to research the topic a little more before you state that prisoners don't do anything.. they are practically slave labor

Well, if you ask me (which no one did for some reason), we should use work to solve the overcrowded prison problems. Make them share cells with people and work in continuous 12 hour shifts. So, while 1 inmate is working, the other is sleeping. That's one of the largest problems the state prison systems have...not enough space or funding.

that is the greatest idea i have ever heard...

especially since I live out here in california... I bet we have enough prisoners in san quentin and such to generate a respectable amount of power.

hmm, most people seem to be in favour, I wonder why this isnt implemented.

it could deter crime too. I mean, if you go to prison now, you can sleep, eat, relax and excercise. No big deal. But if you had to work 12hrs a day 6 days a week cleaning gutters and sorting garbage....that's different

<< How about we use them to test new drugs on like guinne pigs. >>

that idea won't work. I mean, if a guy is doing a year for robbery, why should his life be at risk.

A Human cannot even put out 1 horsepower. We are inefficient. It would take more energy to feed than you would get...
