Hi
I come from the console world where I can take games and full systems to Funcoland or EB and get a big discount on my new gear. as you can see I'm not rich

So, since I am in the computer gaming world now is there a place to do this??

For instance when I want to dump my Vid card and move up to the latest and greatest is there a store I can pull the trade-in move? Prefer Online unless you know of a place in the D.C./ MD / VA area.

Thanks for the help

The For Sale/Trade forum here at Anandtech. You may be able to get a higher price on eBay, but you can sell items a lot faster here.

I just can't seem to force myself to get rid of old hardware. I find that it is worth more to me if I keep it, then the money I get out of selling it. I usually just build a whole new system when I feel the need to upgrade, then retire my old "best" system to backup. This way, I have enough PCs for a LAN party any time I want to.

When I upgrade I reuse as many parts as I can but when I have no need for them I take them to a second hand computer shop and sell them.

Make a list of your old parts and take it to your local computer shop and see what they'll offer. They sometimes have a need for older parts to replace for customers that only use their computers for email and internet browsing and don't want to buy a new one.

Wait until I have enough to build a complete system, then use them as hand-me-downs to friends/family etc. I usually sell obsolete systems to those folks for a few bucks, usually $50-$100 including a monitor. I try not to think about how much I paid for those parts in their heyday :( But at least now all my relatives have e-mail and internet access. Sometimes I'm not sure if that's a good thing ;)

If no one I know needs a cheap system, then it's off to the FS/FT forums and then ebay as a last resort. Or else I just hang on to it and keep on eye on the "wanted to buy" threads on FS/FT - you never know when someone might want an obscure ancient part. If nothing else they make fascinating trinkets.

Sometimes, I like to go into the garage and fire up the old 486. Brings back old memories of floppy based games and Windows 3.1. If you really need to get rid of it though, FS/FT is probably your best bet.
