What to do with my secondary pc???

I need your input, I have two pc's one of which is sitting in my closet collecting dust. I want to put this secondary system to use but I don't really know what I should use it for. Any input would be great.

Primary System
Athlon 750 (classic)
256 mb ram
10 Gig HD
CL Geforce 256 SDR
CL live value
Using BellSouth dsl 1.5/256

Secondary System (in my closet now)
Pentium 133
2.1 Gig HD
192 mb ram
Budget sound card
No monitor
33.6k modem
NIC card

I recently went out and bought a linksys networking kit in a box. It comes with two NIC cards, cable, and a router. I was thinking I could use this to network the two together and share my dsl connection over the two. But what could I use the P133 for? To store all my mp3's?, could I use it to act as some type of firewall? Help me explore the possibilities.

Thanks 😀

If you use that system as a server, you can share your connections and use it as a firewall. Don't think you would need that router anymore... but then you would have to leave this server on 24/7 or at least when you use the other computer... 2.1 gb is not gonna store a lot of mp3's.

I wish I had a computer like that sitting around to use as a server... but all I had was a 90 pentium with around 32mb of ram... so I just took it apart and now it's sitting in my room in pieces... friend took the ram for his 200mhz pc server...

<< NIC card >>

it has one of those Network Interface Card cards in it huh? 😉

Print server would work well, or you could use it as your firewall yes. If you want data storage, your processor should be 300mhz or so unless you run NT4 you might get away with something less.

My 2nd PC is an AMD 233, 64 meg RAM, 1.6 Gig HD, Trident 4 meg with
56K modem and generic sound card.
I use it for 3 things........
Dialup Email
Dialup Web surfing
And for all those old games that run great under older drivers but
not so good with the lastest greatest......

Put linux on it.. stick another netwerk card in it.. then you got;
ftp server
web server
mail server
firewall
router
I got all of that running on a pentium 75 with 24 megs of ram.. I share my net connection over it, and it works great. You're 133 mhz system with all that ram would make a killer linux server.. hook it up.

You might as well sell it off on e8ay and use the money from that to get that SMC router/firewall/print server.

Think of long term.. if that system is used as a firewall, HD or power breaks down, you'll be out of protection for a few hours. Plus the cost of running and space wasted in your hosue to put another computer.

Use a SMC router, it's like 88 bucks now after coupon, doesn't take up much room, doesn't waste power as much as a computer and it's also a print server. Has better firewall then you spending time configuring it and 4 ports for sharing.... or you can get the 8 port version...

Bwwahahahah 300mhz? You are joking right? Well I will just assume you are refering to only MS operating systems....

I run a Firewall (soon to be statefull), file and print server, webserver (SSL apache with PHP and database functions), mail server and a DNS on my Pentium 233mmx with 32megs of ram, and frankly it's overkill for my current needs....

cdrom.com in it's heighday when it was serving the walnutcreek file archive via FTP (before download.com) and handeling 7000+ simaltaneous connections was served off a Pentium 233 with 64megs of ram (and some big friggen storage). So please don't say that you need a 300mhz or better for a file server, unless you are trying to serve more than one household of people that just isn't true.

You could encode DVD's on it, true it would take a week but why not 🙂 or you could do some graphics rendering on it, then it wont slow down your main comp.

Give it to me 😉

Seriously though with 192 megs of ram it's hardly junk.

My vote goes to router or firewall.

Just use it for all that junk...
1. Fire Wall
2. File Server
3. Burner PC.... A little slow for a burner...
4. backup server... Good for backing up all those drivers, and little apps, so you don't have to keep going back onto the net everytime you reinstall...
5. Kids pc.... Well maybe not the Kids computer...
6. web server
7. Ftp server
8. Mp3 server... You need a bigger drive for this.... 2G probably isn't enough...
9. Anchor
10.Paper Weight

The BEST purpose for the second computer, and I'm sure everyone will agree with me, is a 24/7 CS server running the map de_dust!!! LOL!!! 🙂
