What to do with four older DD-WRT N300 routers?

I have two pair of WNR834Bv2 routers, one pair with an older (9xxx) DD-WRT build, and another pair with build 14929. I had been using each pair in WDS mode.

I only just recently replaced them with three WNR2000v2 routers, with build 16785, again running in WDS mode.

Since both routers are Broadcom N routers, I think, although I haven't tested it, that they should all interoperate in WDS mode.

I replaced them because one was only connecting at 13Mbit/sec, instead of 130. Turns out, the power adaptor was going bad. I had a friend buy six brand-new factory-original power adaptors off of ebay for me. So now I have a complete set of four power adaptors to match the routers, and an additional set of four. (Yes, I know, overkill, but I figured I might have these routers for a while.)

Does anyone have any creative uses for routers? I was toying with the possibility of setting them up in client mode, putting in my SSID and WPA key, and then password-protecting the routers so that someone couldn't access that info, and then renting them to neighbors for a few bucks a month to share my internet.

This is Highly illegal in most states.

In addition if any of the ""renter"" do ""bad"" things the FBI would be at your door because the Internet IP is under your name with the ISP.

I don't think sharing internet is in any way actually illegal. (I'd love to hear about it, if it is.)
It may (likely) be against the TOS that you agree to when you connect service, but the worst that the ISP could do to you is disconnect you.

Yes, I realize that. I was running an open wifi for some months, until I came back from vacation, and found out someone had discovered it, and was running BitTorrent on the connection. I stopped offering that, because it had been abused. My poor router wouldn't even respond to the management IP on the local LAN.

The original intent, had been for people to browse the web and check their e-mail, both things which are not network- and resource-intensive.

If I open up my wifi again, I would want to run something like Astaro Gateway, to filter and firewall the connection, and to block BT.

Edit: I googled "illegal to share internet", and none of the top hits could specifically say it was illegal. It did have some links to cases in which people "borrowed"/"stole" WiFi without permission, and were charged. But nothing suggesting that you can't voluntarily share with people.

I take my old stuff to the gun range and blast them into tiny little chunks.

They make great targets.

Make sure you collect the bits though; much of the electronics are considered hazardous waste. Dispose of them according to your community's rules/regs/laws.
