What good is an 8800GTS 512 these days? I have an eVGA version (and an 8600GTS, also from eVGA) just sitting around and I don't know what to do with it. I know it can handle your basic source game at 1080p but what else is it good for? I thougt about throwing it in my HTPC but I like the 4350 simply for the silence it provides and this card is not silent by a long shot.

I'm going to keep the 8600GTS around for a troubleshooting card but this 8800GTS seems like it's too fast to just sit around. But maybe thats just the $350+ I spent on it coming back to haunt me.

run folding@home on it until it dies

Not a bad idea but I would need another PC to do that on. I guess I could throw it in my loaner and use that but I like having it ready to go for lan parties...

Maybe it's time to throw together a really cheap AMD setup... :)

I have an 8800GTS512 sitting around and a HD4870 1 gig. I agree it seems like a shame to let them go for so little money used, when you paid so much to start. That's the way it goes though in the computer world.

Pretty much why I always go mid-range or lower on video card,s things go obsolete so fast.

8800GT is no slouch though, I gamed on a 7900GS forever and it's still playable on small res small details on all games.

went to a 4850, now I have a 5850.

Extra cards, at least a few modern PCI-E, are worth it. Should you get a new board, have a friend in need, it's nice to have it around.

I ended up putting a freaking 6600GT in my main computer to drive an extra monitor. My new 5850 will solve that issue with eyefinity but it was nice to have the spare.

Agreed, ive had an Msi 512mb 8800GTS sitting here for quite awhile now and never considered selling it cuz i'd never get any money for it now.

I just finally put it in a core 2 duo pc i built for my sister since i don't have any other pcie cards here i was willing to get rid of.
But to be honest , I hate letting it go to a NON-GAMER!

But it was either that or give her one of the other cards lying here collecting dust, i still have an XFX 768mb 8800GTX and a EVGA 1gb GTX 280 lying here, I'll keep those as backups cuz they aren't worth selling for what little $$$ I'd get.

Same problem. I have an 8800 GTX with a nice Arctic Cooling Accelero 8800 on it gathering dust in the closet since upgrading last fall. Paid $550 for it back in late 2007. Great card for a long time and it seems a shame to just keep it for a back up card in case the new one ever fails.

I'm not an expert on NV, but I think it can. At least, I know that you can run multiple NV graphics cards in a Crossfire mobo for CUDA purposes (F@H).

Good to know I'm not the only one with a card sitting around.

Random q, how does this card compare with a 9600 gso 384? The gso is the older, faster version with more cores.

Man if I could get ahold of a GTX280 that would be sweet...my old 320MB 8800 isnt doing so well these days and I havnt been able to find a replacement I could afford. I missed out on that 4850 1GB card at newegg for 20$. How much faster is an 8800GT 512MB? What about the 9800/250's? A GTX260 is like twice as fast right?

What do cards like this go for nowadays anyway? I know you can get like a 5770/GTX460 768MB for 100$ or so...how do they compare to these older cards? I really dont have 100$ to spend, but I could probably dig up 50$ to upgrade.

Low end or mid-range goes obsolete even faster tho

I disagree with that. Lowend gpu is used for web games and web browsing.
Same card several years later has no problem doing the same thing.

High end gpu is used for demanding fps games. A year or two later and it may not even run the game or runs a slideshow unless settings are lowered. They don't work that well for things besides gaming because they consume more power and are louder.

Midrange card is something in between as settings slowly get downgraded till it works about as well as a new lowend card wheras it becomes an htpc card.
