What to do with an A10-6700?

I pulled it out of a system I built for a friend, replaced it with a 7850K to get the GCN graphics.

But now what should I do with the 6700?

Is it worth building a system with it, and using a video card?

worth for what?

do you need another system even?

If you have no need, it makes no sense buying more parts for a system which ur not going to use.

Is 7850k really that much of an upgrade from the 6700K? Might have made more sense to add a dgpu to the 6700 instead of switching out apus.

It is a bit of a sidegrade. They are both quad cores -- the 7850k is unlocked and the A10 6700 isn't...... Beyond that, it's not a huge jump. It probably would have been wiser to have tossed in GTX 750 Ti for the money instead if gaming performance was the ultimate goal.

Put it on the trash bin and use the Core i7 6700 like the rest.
/sarcasm

Going serious, sell it.

I build many systems as a hobby. I have several systems of my own, with various processors, both Intel and AMD. I built one specifically to use as a Win10 Insider mule.

I often give them away or sell them for far less than they cost me. I've done that many times.

The only upgrade intent with the 7850K was the graphics, and I wanted to stick with the onboard graphics. It was a huge graphics upgrade.

There will be no more drivers for the non-GCN Apus.

I also have an A10-6700.
I say , keep it.

The AMD turbo boost the A10-6700 has is very decent, 600 MHz from 3.7GHz to 4.3GHz.
But this is limited by the thermal headroom the apu has.
I am keeping a keen eye on the graphics developments from AMD ,planning to buy a discrete GCN card. This would mean that i have to disable the gpu (non GCN) portion of the APU since it is probably not going to support, even for gpgpu software. What it does mean, is that while the gpu side of the apu is disabled, there is much more thermal headroom for the piledriver cores. At least, that makes sense to me. This would mean that the thermal headroom for the turbo boost option would allow for the cores to run longer at a sustained 4.3GHz before thermal throtteling would occur. I am assuming here that disabling the gpu section of the apu in favor of a discrete gpu card, allows for more cpu calculation power because of the sustained maximum 600 MHz overclock with less thermal throtteling. So a discrete card would be a win win situation for someone who want to upgrade a gpu section of their A10-6700.
Of course, this all needs to be proven, but it makes sense, since the gpu is powered down of the apu, that the cpu has more thermal headroom for auto overclocking.

Not only that, in CPU intensive use its TDP is something like 47W, that s 25% less than a 5800K, so it s quite efficient overall...

Also Asrock has realesed some economical but still decent mITX FM2+ boards using the A68H chipset, those MBs support FM2 APUs as well..

For 48 euro, that is not expensive.

This one is also a good choice. For 9 euro more you get the AMD A88X chipset.
GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-DS2 (rev. 3.0).

I myself have the ga-f2a75m-hd2 based on the A75 chipset.
Works fine. With the shuriken B cooler from scythe that i have, there is more then enough space for a discrete card.

I think it would be a nice general use or HTPC CPU...
and if you want some gaming or 4K HEVC it would be ideal to get a gtx 950 or wait for the cheaper Polaris cards.

Yes, this A10-6700 give away (actually FREE, he requests no money) really means so much to me, and this will be my very-first quad-core FM2 I'll use.

The APU on it, being non-GCN, doesn't support the latest AMD Crimson Edition driver.

Yeah that's why I replaced it, as I said in the OP, but you just need a cheap video card to use with it if you need GCN.

I wanted to have the system remain basically exactly the same for the user I built it for, so I did not want to add a video card.

Wow, great stuff! Good on LTC8K6  Looking forward to comparisons with those Llanos.
