what to do with a broken stereo?

bmacd

Lifer
i have a (technically, it's called a shelf stereo, but this thing is a monster) stereo w/ bookshelf speakers. The speakers work great...but the stereo keeps shorting out. I think it'll cost $150 to repair it, but i don't really have any need for it. It is a Pioneer XR-J11M and was manufactured in June of 1994.

I'd take it off your hands but shipping wouldn't be worth it.

If you know it's shorting out, it's either a frayed wire or a busted solder connection. Open it up and fix it.

Pay $150 to fix it? Are you kidding?!? :Q

if it were to "hypothetically" not work after i shipped it, how much money would i get back on it...the amount i insured it for?

I know. I worked there for 3 years, and a customer service supervisor no less for the later portion of my time there.

🙂

Donate it to your local Salvation Army store. Take a tax write-off for the item. But, hurry, you only have a few days left to do that. The Salvation Army has electronics technicians that can repair these items for a fraction of the cost that you or I would pay to have it done. Plus, they'll profit from it when they sell it in one of their stores to some needy buy. You'll benefit because you were able to get a tax deduction out it. 😉

save the speaks and toss the rest

hehe yep. dispose of the rest as you like. I prefer "Office Space Printer" style.

Chiz

I did that to my TI-83

A friend's computer that he wants to get rid of may just have an unfortunate fall off a 5 story building 😉

I'll take pictures, don't worry...

The worst part about this is that you're all 100% correct on the returns 🙁 Just the other day we returned a karaoke machine from walmart. Not only did the upc not ring up as in our system with a price, but the customer had the nerve to return OUR less expensive karaoke machine (on sale at the time for $89) and managed to get back $199. I'll tell ya...these customers are getting hella deals. We see stupid sh|t like this all the time....through no fault of the service desk girls and some fault lies on management.

I never let that kind of BS fly when I was up there. If they started making the service desk girls cry from being such bastards, security was kindly escorting them to the asphault playground outside.

in my two years there, i've seen at least 7 different girls cry at least once from customers yelling at them for not returning something or putting up a fight...some of the girls have cried on more than one occasion.

-=bmacd=-

What do you mean by "shorting out?" Do you mean interminttantly cutting out or shorting, as in throwing sparks and smoke?

I found this Tech Assist Free List. Enter "Pioneer XR-J11M" (in quotes) in the search window for a list of possible solutions.

The best thing you can do in that situation is to maintain a cool, almost cynical apathy toward to unruly individual and they automatically make themselves the antagonist. I didn't have a problem going the extra mile for honest people, but if they dicked around, I couldn't get paid enough appease them.

on a different note, an arab woman (known to be the husband of a local party store owner) came in today and saw that we had most of our Christmas stuff on @ 50% off. She saw our chocolate truffles and told the cashier that i told her they were 50% off...in which they weren't seeing as they were going to be used on Valentines day as well. So i went up there after she mentioned that I said they were 50% off, and she said, "oh, if you're going to bring him up here, then forget it". If it were only one or two, i would have said ok, but this woman had 12 that they were clearly going to resell and mark up. We get a lot of party store owners in all the time that we refuse to sell big quantities to...and then they bitch to corporate about it.
