My family has a storage unit filled to the brim with my late father's record collection.

I'm looking for ideas on how to get rid of all of them. I understand some of the records may be worth some good money (unopened first beatles album, etc.), but i'd definately feel weird selling them for a profit.

Has anyone ever had to get rid of stuff after the passing of a loved one? What did you do?

I feel if I simply donated them all to good will they'd be wasted. eBay? Craigslist? Drop them from a plane over the desert?

Send them to me.

Edit: After my dad died we gave a lot of his stuff that would be useful and useable to his best friend. His old books and research papers and stuff are just stored in his shed; we don't use it anyway. A lot of stuff like old letters and bank statements and crap we had to burn. Give old clothes to charity shops, they take a lot of other stuff too. Offer important or relevant looking things to his friends.

get the records appraised, then decide what you should do.

You could sell them and give a decent percentage to charity. You get some $, poor people get some $, rich collector gets a 1337 record they wanted more than you did. Win-win-win.

But don't be in a hurry. Unless you REALLY need the money, it wouldn't hurt to let the records sit around for a few months while you decide what you really think and feel. Once they're gone, they're gone.

Well it's been about 3 months already. My mom asked me to look into our options because she doesn't wanna pay the storage fee forever. Nobody in my immediate family has the space to store them, either.

I'll see if I can find some local record collectors who would know what the general worth of things are.

They'd definately be wasted if you donated them to Goodwill. Goodwill would sell them for like $2, so you'd be throwing away a lot of money that could be going to the charity.

I think he actually catalogued them for insurance reasons at one point... I'll have to see if I can find that info anywhere.

Taking all ideas into consideration, thanks.

I don't think there is anything wrong with selling them for profit. Your father would have probably wanted you to do that instead of just giving them away

Definitely not rush into it. You should figure out how much they are worth first.

dont give them to goodwill thats a waste, sell them and setup a scholarship in your dads name or something if you dont want to keep the profits.
