What to do when the police will do nothing?

I work at a garage and we get around 100+ cars a week in and out of the shop. Last week we had 10 cars broken into and stereo's stolen. The total comes to around 20-30 in the last couple weeks. The police keep giving us the run around and aren't/wont do anything about it. What can we do to get this situation resloved? Stay there at night to try and catch them in the act? Call the local TV stations? Notify the papers that the local law enforcement wont help out? We've thought about putting a fence up by the township wont allow it. Let me know what you guys think or any idea's you have, cause this has gotta stop. TIA!

Sharks with laser beams attached to their heads.

Either that or an armed security guard or two?

this happened in dallas a few months ago
the landlord stayed overnight and dressed as a cop and arrested the purpetrator once he finally caught him. Handcuffed him with zipties and waited for the cops.
then the dallas police charged him for impersonating a police officer. go figure....

Why can't they hire a security agency? It would seem that if they don't do something their insurance will cancel them.

Whats a security agency cost? I dont think we could afford that. most of the time the customer claims it on their insurance, we offer to claim it on ours but 90% of the time they choose to claim it through their insurance.

Baseball to the back of the head should be enough to knock them out. Then, throw the baseball bat somewhere where it won't be found, tie them up with twist ties, and call the police. When they ask what you did, say you punched them in the back of the head/neck area and it knocked them out. Use a wooden bat so the people that you knocked out can't tell what hit them by the sound. For some reason in this society, capturing a criminal with your own two hands is regarded quite well. However, using a weapon against a criminal gets you sued.

Also, you could put some security cameras up.. but usually they're sh!tty quality and you'll have a fat chance being able to identify them.

You definitely need to get that resolved. Nobody wants to bring their car to a garage that isn't secured.

Get a cheap stereo and a junky car, and be sure to leave it in easy/plain view of the robber, doors unlocked and whatnot. Now, wire a capacitor into the stereo so when they go to remove it, it gives them a nice suprise. Maybe also wire up a strobe lamp to the doors, with a microswitch so that when the thief opens the door, the strobe flashes onces, hopefully leading the would be thief into thinking he just got his picture taken, which might keep him away for a while, giving you time to figure out long term solution.

One other thing you might try, to capture them, is to take an old car with electronic locks, and a remote control to lock/unlock the doors. Just disconnect all the inside lock switches, so they get in to get the stereo, if they don't close the door somebody could run up and slam it, then you hit the lock button, temporarily trapping them.

You are EXACTLY right! We are losing customers because of that, and the issue really does need to be resolved. TonyG thats also a good idea. We were gonna borrow one from a guy who owns a car stereo place and put it in this POS Ford Festiva.....

Seen the movie Christine?

Let the CAR hold the criminals for the police... You'll need a remote control, and a little mechanical work, but it could be a lot of fun to watch :)

Just hire a security agency to stake out your business and bust the bastards. If it costs a few thousand dollars it is cheap compared to what you are going to lose in business. Taking the law into your own hands would be stupid. There are too many ways for you to make yourself liable.
