What to do, what to do....

So you guys might recall from my thread on the Pre, I've owned a lot of smartphones. Since 2006, I have owned...

T-Mobile SDA
T-Mobile Dash
Blackberry Curve
Nokia N95
T-Mobile G1
Palm Pre
Blackberry Tour
HTC Touch Pro 2
Palm Treo 700wx

With the exception of the last 4, which were all about a month each, I had these phones for 9-15 months. I get bored quickly with phones.

Anyway, I recently switched to Verizon, and am temporarily using the POS Treo. I won a contest from work and will be receiving a contract-less HTC Imagio. Its not a bad phone but, you might notice a trend about the above phones - except for the N95, they all have QWERTY keyboards. While the Imagio is a pretty good phone (other than the HD2, probably the best Windows Mobile 6.5 phone on the market feature-wise), but I know in the long run, I won't like it, because it doesn't have a keyboard.

So now the dillema. Droid comes out on Friday. I'm a big Android fan - the G1 was my favorite of the above phones, and the Droid is essentially a G1 on steroids. So, I could sell the Imagio (they're going for $400 new on eBay) and buy the Droid. I know I'll like the Droid. However....there are more, and possibly better, Android phones coming. Passion/Dragon will kick ass, but that's a no go because of the keyboard - but what about a snapdragon-based HTC phone with Android 2.0/Sense with a keyboard like the TP2? That'd be enticing.

So that's the question...sell the Imagio now, buy the Droid? "Suffer" through the Imagio for 4-6 months, then buy whatever the latest-and-greatest is?

As has already been discussed: If you keep waiting for the next best phone, you will never buy a phone.

Go for the Droid. You will NOT be unhappy with it and when new shit comes around you may be a little jealous, but you wont be mad you got your Droid.

Thats what I'm doing. My 1 year contract is up today and I get a Droid tomorrow. Despite their cost Verizon will be keeping my business for a little while longer.

Yea, I know that - I just try to stay on the leading edge, rather than the trailing edge. Is the Cortex A8 really all that impressive anymore, with Snapdragon on the way?

Hrm...actually, I think the next big breakthroughs will be late 2010 - about the time we'll be seeing LTE filtering through the markets, Windows Mobile 7, assuredly new versions of Android, WebOS, possibly Snapdragon's successor...

At the rate you're going, if you buy the DROID now, there will be nothing better than it by the time you go "tired" of it (early 1Q 2010 at the latest), so that's what I would do if I had an unlimited cell phone budget.

Sell the Imagio, buy the Droid, if you don't like it, it should hold it's value pretty well, sell it for the next best thing when it comes out. I don't know of any physical keyboarded Android OS phones coming in the near future, everything I see has a virtual keyboard.

The thing is Android will be a very popular phone OS, and I suspect there will be a slew of them in the next year, it's going to rock for Android users.

I'd do it before the ETF is raised on the 15th.

That's a good point. Droid will hold its value better than Imagio - I can sell Droid for more in 4-6 months than I can Imagio. I actually have one pre-ordered from Best Buy, so it would be before the ETF goes up - looks like I'll be going through with it.

Alright alright I got the Droid...and ironically enough, as I got back to the office from buying it, the Imagio was waiting for me on my desk.
