What to do on ice in the car?

Lets say there's snow, ice, etc. and its really slippery. If you lose control of the car, what is it best to do. If certain items are used only in certain conditions, tell those.

I've heard two things. One of them is to steer the same direction the car is going and try to regain control, but I don't remember what next.

The other is to turn it another direction and floor it quickly.

Winter is coming up and I got curious about this topic because I'll be driving within about two months...

Hmm... I think pretty much unless you have years of experience you're going to lose control.

Remember not to brake hard because you'll just lose control more. Don't gas hard either, especially in a rwd car. I'm not really sure what to do, just turn into the swerve and try to slow down?

Depends on which wheels are driving the vehicle, what kind of differential, and the weight as well.

flooring in the snow = losing even more control. Don't even try it. If you're skidding you need to gently steer yourself back towards the way you actually want to be going.

Also try not to turn hard or fast because you can make the rear end pass the front of the car. It is real easy to turn left then be unable to get the car going in the currect direction and end up in the wroung lane.

When you do get a little snow in your area, go find yourself a big empty parking lot that's kinda level and doesn't have any light poles to run into. Mall or stadium during off times can work. Then just drive around and do donuts and stuff until you get the feel for how your car's gonna slip and slide. Please keep it safe and don't go fast so that you lose control or someone calls the cops or anything. It's good practice for the real thing and lets you know how your car handles in the snow.

Basically you turn in the direction you're skidding. If your car is skidding with the right side going first, then you correct by turning your wheels to the right, but don't overcorrect. If you turn the opposite you'll do a 180.

That's my 2 cents, hope it helps....

I have a few tips: (but as already said it really all depends on what kind of vehicle you are driving, AWD, FWD, RWD etc)

If you are sliding and your brakes are not doing anything, try dropping it to 1st or 2nd gear and let off the pedals.. A lot of times this will slow you down good enough to break.

If you have already lost control and you know you are headed for the ditch, point your wheels in the direction you want to go and give it some gas.. Because if you stop in the ditch you are stuck there, use the momentum you already have..

As others have said, there are some general guidelines to follow, but to really be able to handle a skid the best, you need to get experience in the car you'll be driving. Each car has it's own handling characteristics that you need to be familiar with to best regain control of the car.
