Heading to San Francisco pretty soon for a few days. Taking my wife but I'll be working all day and will only have the evening to do stuff with her. Staying near Union Park Square. What are some things my wife should do on her own and what are some things we should do together in the evenings? Also what restaurants should we hit up?

Thanks for suggestions.

From what I'm told, whatever you do, stay out of the more southern parts of the city. That is the "bad area".

I think it was the southern part, at least. It might be a different part, so the thing to take away from my post is: stay out of the bad areas.

You can go to the tourist trap Pier 39 (?) and rent bikes and bike across the Golden Gate bridge and go into the nice town on the other side of the bay and then shop, eat and get a ferry ride back. Or go to the park in the city and see the Buffalo.

We went to the Wayfare Tavern last time we were in SF (a month ago) and really enjoyed it: http://wayfaretavern.com/ Good food, drinks, and vibe in the place.

Absolutely NOTHING.

Anyone who has to ask, "What is there to do in <insert name of major city> shouldn't bother leaving their hotel room.

Also, visit the dock where you get fresh sea food, and get your car broken into and everything stolen

You're really starting to live it up as the crazy cranky old bastard. Time to kick the can to make some room for the rest of us.

If you've never been to the city, knock out all the touristy stuff.

Cable Cars,
Fisherman's Warf,
GG Bridge
Union Square

Will you have a car while here? How much time?

If you have some spare time and a vehicle.

Alexander Ave across the GG Bridge, just go for a leisurely drive, and yes keep doing past the 18% grade one way sign, just go.

The only thing I would do is what I do on pretty much every city I go to near a coastal region: eat my weight in seafood. Eat as much seafood as you can, especially if you're from the midwest.

2nd this. Drove down to SF from Vancouver. Brother of GF suggested we take this road when heading out of town. View and pucker factor was fantastic.
