What to do in Philly

My V/STOL class (vertical and short take-off and landing) is going to Philadelphia Oct. 23-27 (I go to Iowa State Universtiy). During the day on the 24rd and 25th we're visiting the helicopter museum and going to Boeing. However the rest of the time is open including those two nights and all of Saturday.

I'm looking for stuff to do. 4 of my best friends in my major are also going so anything would be fun... bars, clubs, stripclubs etc, preferably not too far from where we're staying, which is the Comfort Inn at 100 N. Christopher Columbus Blvd I think.

Also, is it feasable to go to the Smithsonian in D.C on Saturday. If so, how long is the trip, can we take the train and if so how much does it cost?

i was there about a 9 months ago...

saw the liberty bell, freedom hall, tomb of the unknown soldier, and lots of other american history places.

also, eat chinese in china town one night.

careful where you walk...some place are pretty rough.

if the weather is nice, just walk around the historic areas...there are walking tour brochures to help with navigation.

If you're going to venture into South Philly for a Cheese Steak, you might as well do it right an hit up Tony Luke's


DC is like 3 hours away by car. Not sure how train impacts it, nor the cost. It should be doable.
Plenty to do in the city--historic stuff, Cirque Du Soleil is in town, clubs, South Street, good food.


Let me know how the chopper museum is. I've heard good things about it but never been there.

Pardon my language here but: Pats Steaks suck. Anyone who lives in the Philadelphia area KNOWS Pats Steaks, yet goes to another steak shop to get their favorite steak. Pats started the whole cheesesteak sandwich thing or were there when it first started, but as with all things and time, have grown cheaper and offer less. As one whose lived in the Philadelphia area awhile I would instead recommend you take a cab to South Street and hit Jim's Steaks. Not only will you have a good steak but you can work up a good appetite at the surrounding bars and clubs along South street. Also theres Dave & Busters. Theyre on Delaware Avenue, and as with everything else on Delaware Ave, their a little more pricey, so bring a full wallet. Now if your looking for historical sites I would recommend the area of 5th and market street. There youll see Independence Hall, Liberty Bell and whats left of the house of Ben Franklin. You can also catch a carriage ride there too which will take you up chestnut past some other homes of historical significance. As for restaurants, 18th & Market(on 18th street) theres The Elephant & Castle. Good Food at dinnertime, and close to 100-120 different beers to select from. Their menu is mostly english and american. prices at E&C are right around prices you would pay at a chilis or ground round restaurant. Has anybody had the cheesesteaks at Chubby's in Roxborough? If so, how do you feel they rate? I'm on my own cheesesteak quest, but so far I've really only sampled Chubby's and Jim's.

I think a train ride to DC might be a little pricey, BTW.

forget that crap like the liberty bell and independence hall.

There's always a party going on Delaware Ave... there's so many clubs you really can't go wrong. South Street also has a crapload to do. And there's strip clubs a plenty here in Philly. just walk around and you'll no doubt find something to do.
