BTW, I did something like this for about a year. I tried starting a couple of businesses including an online portal. But mostly, I ate junk food and slept in late and got lazy because the rewards werent immediate enough to kick me into necessary overdrive. Whatever you do, keep something as a center to your life to energize you daily. Don't leave your calender blank for days and weeks on end. Otherwise you'll wake up one day and wonder what the hell happened to the time.

"rich dad, poor dad" is fiction. many reports saying that rich dad doesnt exist.

(the book said rich dad lived on the same block as the author. reporters combed thru years of addresses for someone that owned a construction business. came up blank.)

thx for the tip about the calander. going to print one up and start filling it in w/stuff. wait, i own a pda... DUH! :)

Wow, there are some people with some serious money management problems if you can't make 60k last mroe than a year. I'm with the OP, I could make 60k go for a couple of years. Americans really are spoiled.

I could last a couple of years on 60k, but life would be considerably less interesting.

Is that your retirement savings you're talking about?

I'm with the folks that suggested school or business. Don't burn through that money. BTW, I feel like doing the same thing, but I won't. Where do you live?

60k is actually pretty good if you treat it like you are living in college
i figured i spend about 6-8k a year on house food and other crap (yes i am in college)

though that doesn't lend itself to doing lots of vacationing n such

Ok, it's more of a 1/3 life crisis.

I'm 30, single (no gf), own a house ($1k/month mortgage), and am a computer nerd. Last month, I quit a job I didn't like.

I have enough $ to last a couple of years ($60k after taxes). (and maybe 5 years if i sell my house.)

From the beginning of the year, the only thing I've been doing was watching the clock and waiting for my options to vest. I didnt give any specific thoughts to the future except my resignation letter.

During the past month, I've been:
- sleeping late
- playing pool from noon to 6pm
- literally throwing a dart at a map of a neighboring state and driving there for few days for the fun of it
- surfing the web
- gone to Vegas for a week with friends (broke even)

I don't know what I want to do in life.

Suggestions to what to do next (in addition to getting a girlfriend)?

Rephase:
Besides looking for a gf, what would *YOU* do if you had $60k cash and didn't want to work?

Umm is it just me, or is $60k not a lot of money? I have that much, and I hate my job, but you can't live off of that... Take a month or 2 off go on vacation, then get another job man. You don't want to be 50 and broke...

I suggest you invest your $60,000 in a startup computer/network security firm ran by me.

I would pursue my lifelong dream to create public sculpture (I have a metalworking background but currently work 40 hrs/week in tech support).

$60k can last me 2 years.

my expenses are:
$1k/month mortgage
$1.2k/month misc (utils/insurance/food/entertainment/etc)

= $2.2k/month expenses

60k = ~2.5 years

That's with your current expenditure state, not with your newfound 'midlife crisis' state.

so far it's about a guy who got dumped at the altar, and decided to goto his honeymoon location anyway as a vacation.

Rent your house out and go travel. How about buying one of those cheap fly around the world tickets for one price? Teaching ESL would be a great idea. I lived in Japan for almost four months and it really broaden my outlook on life. Get a backpack and stay at the many hostels there are around the world. Believe me, spend as little amount of money and stay away from America for at least six months. You will be a LOT wiser and appreciative of what you have...

you sound burnt out more than anything to me. eventually, you'll see that you probably do want to get back into the work life (maybe try a new career?), but enjoy these months while you can.

I don't know what I want to do in life.

I was exactly where you are now. I had a job, but I was all lost and didn't know where to go. Also consider how lonely I am - not only I lack a GF, not any friends either. I looked back at my life and after constant thinking over the matter I think I understood what it didn't have.

Man, I never worked hard in my life. Never fought for anything. There were not any positive examples around me that would teach me what to do. Somehow one day I woke up and had a revelation of some sort. I understood why I never had a girlfriend. If you want something you have to work for it, day after day, little by little. It won't fall on you from the Heavens on a golden plate. That's what life is about I think. Nobody will tell you what to do, you have to produce your strategy yourself. Others are too busy with themselves to care.

4. Optional: rent to hot coeds. Install spycams.
5. PROFIT!

hth!

Wow, that is a good idea, except for the spycam idea. That will make you waste your money on bail bonds.

I also like the MBA, Rich Dad/Poor Dad, and the Parachute ideas, although it's a little unrealistic these days to expect a golden parachute - maybe golden handcuffs.

You could also:

1) Spend 60k on lottery tickets
2) Profit!
