What to do in Las Vegas?

Parents just offered me a free trip to Vegas (they are going on business).

I'd have about 3-4 weekdays there and end up missing a week of college shortly before exams and assignment dates. I could prob catch up and finish my projects early if I work hard--the question is: is it worth that extra cramming?.

I'm not into the gambling, coke or hookers thing so that is ruled out. Watching old hasbeen singers sing in bars isn't that great either and I -hate- seeing broadway style shows.

Should I go? What else can I do there that is entertaining but not overly costly? I'd love to hear what other people have done there.

I'll go if I can pack enough fun stuff into those 3-4 days that makes it worthwhile and not overly expensive (don't want to drop more than say $500 USD touring the place and eating out for all meals).

Have you actually ever been to Vegas before? And what is your experience with gambling?

The answers to these questions will determine by advice for you.

Never been to Vegas before. Hell, never been south of Detroit.

As for gambling--I've lived across from a casino for, oh, around 8 years and haven't been in there once. I don't gamble at all (not a religious thing...just realize chances are you will lose).

I think with all the things you mentioned you dont like - i doubt you'd have fun. People usually go there for the shows, gambling, etc... all the stuff you didnt want to do.

Well I shouldn't have sounded so closed. I'm into shows, but just not certain ones like broadway or those flamingo dancer whatever you call them things.

I'm all into stuff like IMAX or whatever. Is there cool scenery around there too? Red Rocks was mentioned, is that it? I'm guessing the desert doesn't offer a whole lot.

I'm sure there IS other stuff to do in that city and that is basically what I'm asking for.

Plenty of shows there besides the showgirl-type ones. There's an IMAX at the Luxor, Blue Man Group at the Luxor, Penn & Teller, and 4 different Cirque de Soleil shows along the strip. Quite a few other free or cheap things to do, it's also fun just to walk the strip and check out the theme hotels and whatnot.

Hrm think I'll go.

When it was just the city of Las Vegas it wasn't as appealing but I've done some research and nearby attractions like Red Rocks, Hoover Dam, Mount Charleston all look like some fun scenery things to do.

I guess I should plan it pretty well before I go, call places and find bus times and tickets around so I can pack it all up tight into those days.

If you have any more ideas on particular shows you felt were good I'm all ears :)

I wouldn't rule those out so early. Start on the nickel machines first, by the third day you should be at the hooker stage.
