What to do in LA?

Well I'll be heading off to LA next week to spend two weeks with an old friend of mine. I figured, with my girlfriend off to vietnam I should do some traveling of my own. I've lived in the boston area pretty much my whole life. I guess I'm asking, when he's out working, what's there to do around the LA area and where she I stay away from? Any advice for a New England newbie?

You'd probably do better if your thread title read "What to do in LA?" instead of "First leaving New England". Just a suggestion.

C'mon anyone have any advice? Is there anything fun to do in downtown LA? Besides the obvious sightseeing, what about places to eat?

Stay away from downtown and south central. Those are places to go if you're either ghetto, working, or homeless.

Head to the beaches. It's awesome weather and if I wasn't working that's where I'd be. Also keep in mind that this city is massive so you might want to specify where in LA you're going to be.

Beaches, eh? Well I thought LA would be somewhat like Boston where there's stuff to do everywhere (aquarium, museums, colleges, sailing). Dunno exaclty where my friend lives, but he said he lives 5 mins out from LAX (said he can hear the planes over his apartment).

5 minutes from LAX? Your friend lives in the hood then? Inglewood? Better bring a bulletproof vest and some 40's for the homies

go to the end of venice blvd in marina del rey and grab a bite to eat at C&Os.. very good italian food. and when you're done, take a little walk on thebeach.. venice beach is right there

Getty museum. You get to see all of LA, from the ocean to the west all the way downtown.

Then there's Magic Mountain, Disneyland, Sunset Blvd and Santa Monica for lots of bars/clubs..

I used to go to school at LMU which is about 5-10 minutes from LAX. That neighborhood isn't bad at all. Marina del Rey is close by... go a little north and you're at Santa Monica beach and 3rd street promenade. Two guys walking by the beach during sunset isn't new here. 😛

you're gonna need a car if your buddy's at work

I don't have a liscense 🙁 Never needed one since Boston's T took me where ever I needed. From the looks of it LA seems like a really spread out city.

Well, you won't be going anywhere without a car in LA. It's not like NY,Chicago,SF, or anyone of those real cities where you can take the subway to get around the cities.

No car in LA = death. You'll be walking the Freeway to get around in LA

Rent a car now. I've had friends come to visit and unless you want to wait until he gets home from work to do anything, you're going to need a car. Unfortionately, where you're at, you can take the bus but it would be ghetto.

The Getty is a good idea. It's free and besides the museum the outside is awesome. I prefer the grounds to the museum. You also have the La Brea Tarpits and the Natural History Museum. Where you're at you should hit up Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica, and Venice. For Amusement parks you have Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, Knots Berry Farms, and Raging Waters. Take your pick. Drive up the Mullholland at night. Head to San Diego. There are tons of threads on this here aren't there?

Scuba Diving and camping at Catalina is great too.

Take a bus to San Diego and then a local train to the border in Tiajuana for a visit if you don't drive. After TJ, it feels good to be back in America.
