Drive straight past it to Chicago?

Definitely this.

The only cool part of Indy for you would be Broad Ripple based on your listed hobbies.

If your company is paying for dinner, or you like good steak and shrimp cocktails (with intense cocktail sauce), hit up St. Elmo Steakhouse.

Slippery Noodle for some decent music (At times), right down by Union Station. The Zoo is awesome! Ike and Jonesy's is a decent club to go to also.

Indy is an awesome city -- don't listen to the bozos telling you to go straight to Chicago.

As Playtpus says, Broad Ripple is the place to go for the local restaurants. I recommend Brugge Brasserie, a Belgian restaurant that has awesome steak frites and great beer they brew on premise. Bazbeaux Pizza is good as well. Downtown Indy also has lots of restaurants, shops, and clubs as well. Where is your seminar? Downtown or on another side of town?

Forgot about this place, their pizza is awesome.

And the beauty is, they have a location in Broad Ripple AND another location downtown on Mass Ave. The Rathskellar (German) is another decent place downtown as well.

SE of downtown is another neighborhood/district called Fountain Square. It is another area filled with local restaurants. My favorite there is Santorini's Greek Kitchen -- easily the best Greek place in Indy, but don't get the hummus; for whatever reason, it isn't very good.

West 38th St, near the 465 loop, is becoming Indy's international district. It is a rough area but a lot of ethnic restaurants are there -- Peruvian, Ethiopian, Cuban, Vietnamese, etc. I had Ethiopian there a few weeks ago. Interesting, to say the least.

Broad Ripple was always a cool place to hang. Lots of clubs and places to grab a bite. The Vogue theater is a nice smaller venue to see a band, dunno if you are interested in the upcoming shows tho. I recommend the Mousetrap Bar and Grill. I went to HS with one of the DJs there.
Circle Center mall and the very center of downtown indy are neat to see and walk around. if you like architecture, the Scottish Rite Cathedral is close to downtown and is pretty cool to get a tour of. The Rathskeller is a cool place as well. Tons of places to eat downtown. If you like science and museums, the Children's Museum is pretty awesome to see, even if you arent a kid. Also there is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and i am pretty sure there is a museum there for that. It's been a LONG time since i went there tho. Also, the Eiteljorg Museum and Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Depending on how much free time you have and your interests and willingness to drive, there is Conner Prairie.

dammit i type too slow and IndyColtsFan beat me to it on some places. :p

You can also walk the canal towards the southwest and you'll also run into a few museums like the Indiana State Museum (the Eiteljorg is next to this; I personally think the Eiteljorg is boring but to each his own) and you'll wind your way around to the NCAA National Office and attached to it is the NCAA Hall of Champions.
