What to do in Georgia?

I'm flying down to Georgia on May 24th with my parents to see my cousin, his wife, and their new babies. My cousin is like the older brother I never had and I rarely see him so I'm pretty excited. He's also a working (and very successful) graphic designer and since I'm going in to graphic design it'll be good to talk to him. Not to mention he says to leave room in my suitcase because he has some stuff for me. ;)

So my question is this: What is there to do around Alpharetta? I'll have a car and a GPS so getting around shouldn't be a problem.

BTW, I'll be there for 4 days.

Got any cousins around you can bang? When in Rome...

I recommend visiting this chinese restaurant in Marietta. I don't remember the name but it was the best I'd ever had.

He said Alpharetta. Rome is further North.

You're about 45 minutes from downtown. Go to Buckhead and hit some bars/microbrews. Get some Redbrick.

I live in Alpharetta. Some ideas:

1) If you're into good food, let me know. You might be surprised, but Alpharetta has some really good food options. There's a solid international showing as well, with good Thai, Indian and Italian options. Mexican is lacking though unless you like Tex-Mex.

2) You could head up to the mountains. There's a town not far from here called Helen, GA. It's in the foothills of the Appalachians. You could hike, spend some time shopping, eat at some of the restaurants, etc.

3) There are a lot of nice running/walking trails if you're into that. One runs about 15 miles through Alpharetta. We go on that all the time. Let me know if you want more details.

4) You could see an opera, symphony, or play. Triple Espresso at Roswell is a good one and it's close to Alpharetta.

Of course, there's a lot more you can do in the Atlanta area. Let me know if you're willing to head into the city and I can give you more options. Alpharetta is a nice town, but it's mostly a family town. You'll find great restauarnts, etc. but not really so much nightlife. Midtown in Atlanta offers a better showing in that respect.

Was it Tasty China? A very authentic Szechuan place, but I haven't been there in a while. Xiam's on Windward in Alpharetta is pretty good in a PF Chang's sort of way. Their chicken with mushu pancakes are quite good.

Nothing much in Alpharetta, I would head south down GA400 (toll road) and go to Buckhead - (about 10-15 minutes) and then further south down I-85 to Downtown/Midtown (about 20-25 minutes).

I live in Alpharetta too, and what Descartes says is dead on. Not much of a nightlife, just some local restaurants/bars that have live music.

Buckhead was a good suggestion for bar hopping. The aquarium is also pretty cool if you've never seen it. Although both of them a ways from Alpharetta.

May 24th? How about the The Official Atlanta Caribbean Carnival?

I too live in Alpharetta. I goto Taco Mac for there 125 beers on Draft, and 300 beers in bottles. Sounds like we should have an AT meet up when you get down here, might be fun. I'd still have to agree that to really go bar hopping and stuff like that, buckhead/midtown are your best bet.

There's a fairly new Frys off of Windward in Alpharetta.

There is the North Point Mall with tons of shops and places to eat around it also.

There is the Mall of Georgia in Buford which isn't far from there and it's the biggest mall in the state.

You can go kayaking on the Chattahoochee river for $10 per person from The Dam Store located in Buford/Sugar Hill area.

I did this this past weekend actually and had a blast.

You can take 400 down to 285 and make your way on over to Stone Mountain Park to watch the laser light show and just enjoy the nature of it all.

You can head up to Lake Lainer for the day.

There's the Coke Museum in Atlanta or the Georgia Aquarium, which is right next door to it, both are worth the cost to get in at least once.

You could go see the Braves play (if they're playing a home game that is)

I could give you more ideas but it really depends on what you're interested in doing.

I've been there a number of times and it's very good.

Better and PF Chang's IMO

OP, you a golfer?

Lots of nice courses in the Atlanta area. I'm heading down Wednesday from Chicago to play with some clients. Nothing like getting out of the office for a few days to golf...

wow, we seem to have quite a few people that live in Alpharetta. I've next door in Roswell. Within short walking distance to historic Roswell.

I say eat some BBQ. Slope's BBQ, Dreamland BBQ, and Swallow at the Hollow all have decent BBQ.

QFT. Taco Mac is a great bar. I'm in Chattanooga, TN and my name is on the wall there.

My only gripe is they changed the menu and the Buffalo Burger isn't the same anymore....

Oh man, I'm going to do a public service and introduce you to some far better pizza in the Atlanta area :)

1) Savage is better. It's not far from Little 5. I'm sure you've been there.
2) Everybody's is better. There's one in the Highlands.
3) Cameli's is better. It's in the shopping center near the Kroger on Ponce.
4) And finally, St. Angelo's is the best pizza I've had the privilege of eating until I'm sick in the Atlanta area. Seriously, it's delicious. It's the closest thing to a real NYC slice that you can get, imo.

Mellow Mushroom is quite good too, but the locations seem to be wildly different in terms of quality. The one on Windward has been consistently good for me, but it still doesn't touch St. Angelo's.

If you want to take in some hiking and Southern history, visit Stone Mountain Park. I was there a few years ago and found it fascinating. You can meet some interesting people on your hike up and down Stone Mountain.

If you're downtown during lunch weekdays, check out Rosa's Pizza on Broad St. Tony makes good NY style pies and is Cremosa rep to Savage, Fellini's, and many NY style pizza joints around town.
