The woman and I are heading up to Detroit to attend a wedding Saturday evening. Anybody have any suggestions for something to do Friday evening and Saturday morning & afternoon in Detroit.

Local brew pubs would be preferred.

Michael Symon opened a new restaurant downtown called "Roast", go check it out. If you want a place that has good BBQ (for Detroit) and a great beer selection, check out Slow's BBQ in Corktown (west of downtown, by the old Tiger Stadium).

Where exactly will you be staying?

Our hotel is up in Pontiac - but I'm game for going wherever a good joint is located.

I'm not sure which would be the most painful.

Detroit is a good 30 minute drive from Pontiac, hope you don't plan on staying out too late. You can hit up the lodge to go to the casinos if that's your thing.

Buy up decrepit properties, remodel and rent them out to section 8 tenants.

Pontiac has a ton of very cool bars. Check out JD's Key Club, or Tiki Bob's.

I'll be at the Crofoot in Pontiac on Thursday to see AC Newman, come into town early and catch a good show.

BTW, Pontiac is a rough place, watch your step. They laid off most of their police force, now relying on the county's sheriffs dept.

It doesn't bother me too much - I'm originally from the Dallas-Fort Worth area where it took no less than an hour to go wherever it was you wanted to go.

Everytime I see the word Detroit, I think about the beginnig of that kiss song:

"In Detroit, a Pontiac, Michigan youth was reported dead at the scene of a head-on collision on Grand Avenue this morning. The youth was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the boulevard when he struck a delivery truck and was catapulted through the windshield of his car. The driver of the truck is reported to be uninjured. The identities of both men are being withheld by local police."

I, wanna rock all night, and party everyday!

If you actually want to see Detroit, by all means, drive down there. It'll take you more than 30 minutes though, probably. I would suggest swinging by the DIA if you like museums (and the Detroit Film Theater, which is located inside, if you're a movie buff).

But since you're in Pontiac, I'd say just to drive up the road and find a nice restaurant to eat at in Bloomfield/Farmington Hills/Birmingham. Birmingham has a nice and upscale "downtown" area where you can walk around. Everything from steak houses to neo-French cuisine, with bars everywhere. They have a good Irish pub there that serves food and sometimes has live music, it's called Dick 'o Dows.

I honestly haven't spent much time in Pontiac in a long time, so I couldn't tell you if there's anything interesting there. iamwiz82 mentioned JD's Key Club, which is a dueling piano's place - always a good time, but maybe not on your own. Are you going to be with other people?

Thanks for those suggestions. I am going up there with my fiancee; it is one of her friends that is getting married.

Ah, fiancee - I would definitely suggest a walk around Birmingham, if you like a more upscale scene. Not too far of a drive for you and you can literally just take Woodward south until you see the signs. It'll be like the Woodward Dream Cruise...only it's just you two.

The closest thing I can suggest for a brewpub is Bastone, in Royal Oak. I love the place - great food at reasonable prices and they brew their own beer. They run different specials and then they have a little lounge/bar in the basement. Royal Oak is kinda like Birmingham in that it's a walkable downtown area, but it definitely skews to a younger crowd, for the most part. Lots of good dining there too.

oh no! Some of these posts are awful. Since I lived there for 2.5 years, I feel kinda sorry for the awesome surrounding areas that have to deal with "Detroit" as being their association. Let it be known that the surrounding townships barely whisper the word Detroit. It's "Southeast MI". And some of them are just as upscale as it gets.

You're in Pontiac, which my impression was pretty awful. Each township is different and has it's own feeling. Some are pretty rank, some average and some very cool. If you go over to Rochester, right beside Pont. (Roch is where I lived), the downtown is neat and they have some great shopping/restaurant areas. This is where Eminem lives and Madonna is from, Kid Rock is very close too, north. Off Walton/Adams is a great outdoor 'mall' with good rest.'s. Royal Oak has a great downtown with a good Mexican bar/rest and probably others. Downtown Birmingham is the Rodeo Drive of the area. Is it chic, and has some GREAT bars and restaurants. Shopping will break the bank. Troy's Somerset Mall is pretty famous. One side is upscale (Tiff/Neimans) the other side is more affordable.

If you really want to catch the full flavor of 'Detroit' as a tourist, go to the Red Wings Cafe (I think that's it's name) in the heart of Detroit, or visit the Motown Museum. RW Cafe is close to GM, etc. It's a sports bar and fully decked in RW stuff. If you don't have a nav or mapquest, I'd advise not to get lost. It most def. is quite a scary place in areas. But it is an experience. It is very true that 8 mile is the border between Det. and Oakland Co. HUGE difference.

Lastly, if you stay up North and travel all the way East on 59 from Pontiac, lots of shopping and restaurants, activity. There's one thing about SE MI.... there is no shortage of stuff to do and spend money on!

Damn, you're going to be on the other side of town from me. Now if you're coming to west side I'd have some suggestions.

But, yes like others have said, you're not too far from a lot of nightlife on the far east side.

yep, I got that wrong! Hockeytown Cafe. It's been 5 years since I thought about Detroit. Sorry about that Red Wings. Thanks for the reminder! I went to a concert at Ford Field, the sound was terrible (well especially from the nosebleed section), but the stadium is very impressive. I still thought they were kind of wimpy building an indoor when the Packers tough it out in the elements : )
