What to do in Atlanta?

I have an all expenses paid trip to a conference in Atlanta at the end of the month. I'm not sure how much downtime I'll have, but I'd appreciate recommendations for good restaurants and sights.

only if you are ... er... into gangsta music or hip-hop....or getting shot at lol

😕 Wikipedia says Buckhead is an upscale area?

I've been there a couple times and there's no danger of being shot or anything like that. Buckhead is a decent sized part of the city but specifically what I was referring to is a few blocks of clubs and bars. It's not all hip-hop clubs...you'll have a place spinning Lil Jon right next to a piano bar right next to a sports bar right next to a place playing club music. All kinds of stuff. They block off the streets and it gets pretty packed with people.

World of Coke.

They just opened a new one.

Stone Mountain.

Zoo

Aquarium

Braves game.

Historic Fox theater, they have been showing movies recently during the week days.

Underground Atlanta if you feel like getting mugged 😛

Where will you be staying? Will you have a car? What kind of food do you like? What's your price range. I think I've eaten at every Atlanta restaurant worth eating, so I can offer some references.

Dog fights at Vick's house.

Go play catch with Joey Harrington, help him get warmed up to start for the Falcons next season 😉

I actually don't know where I'm staying; a foundation is taking care of my arrangements and picking me up from the airport. It'll be somewhere in the downtown area though. I won't have a car (not old enough to rent), but taxi expenses are covered and I'm fine with walking if it's within a mile or so. I enjoy fine dining, so there's no real price cap and I'm open to trying any food that's good.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not old enough to get into a club. 🙁

Get a steak at Bone's.

And I'll repeat: the aquarium is a must see.

Yeah, maybe you'll get to see a whale shark swim upside down. 😛

the aquarium is pretty cool ... maybe six flags? but it's not really downtown obviously, but i *think* you can take marta there...but then again, i'm probably wrong

if you are down on a thursday, you could go to piedmont park to catch a free movie....with a buttload of folks

also, buckhead isn't nearly as bad as i made it out to be...but that doesn't really matter since you said you can't get into bars. you can always go walk around Little 5 Points...just take Marta east and get off at the Reynoldstown stop.

for food i recommend:
the vortex
spoon
atkin's park
surin's thai

sorry, i can't think of anymore now that i've got surin's on my mind...

Screw Bones, go to Mulligan's in Decatur and get yourself a Hamdog or an infamous Luther Burger

and you can probably get some real cheap sushi. 😀

Fogo de Chão is a GREAT restaurant, its an interesting buffet style place, you get a token that's green on one side, red on the other. If you turn the green side up the waiters who roam around carrying every kind of meat imaginable (no jokes 😛) will stop and offer you some, turn the red side up when you need a break. Plus they have a few side dishes that are always kept filled on your table, and a fantastic salad bar.

Course, if you're a vegitarian don't go there...

And for entertainment the aquarium is decent, so is Zoo Atlanta. Buskhead is overrated IMO but since you're underage there really isn't a reason to go there. Aside from that, Braves game or World of Coke.

**EDIT** If you have more time to kill and feel like a drive go to Little 5 Points.
