What to do: getting a tag on a car in IA so I can drive it to NC

Sometime in the next 6 months I am planning on buying an 88 Mustang from a friend in Iowa. I am going to make a road trip out of this, and drive to IA with a friend. My friend and myself will drive back with the Mustang and my current vehicle. When I get the Mustang back to NC, I do not want to put insurance on it for several months. I have already talked to my insurance company, and I know what I need to do regarding insurance to drive it home.

Now my problem is what to do about a tag. Currently, the Mustang has an Iowa tag on it, but I will need to purchase a NC tag for it. Will the tag office in IA issue a 30 day temp tag, or do I drive it to NC with the IA plate, and then mail the IA plate back to my friend in IA? I went to the tag office today, but there was at least 20 people in line, and I didn't have time to wait.

Thanks!

If the plates are current and not expired, just drive it with the plates that are on it and mail them back. The tag office in IA will issue a temp tag if the plates are expired, but I'm not sure how it works.

Just stop in at any local Iowa Treasurer's Office and get a Temporary Tag. Good for 30 days.

just drive it back. If you get pulled over for any reason (I've never known a cop anywhere to pull anyone over solely for expired registration) tell him you just bought the car, show him the receipt, and he'll most likely let you off on the registration. Anyway, if over there is like here in CA, you have 10 days to register the car under your name after you buy it. Also, if you get a ticket for expired registration, the judge will drop it if you show him proof of registration.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Also - good choice in cars! my car :)

Thanks for the advice..

Nice car! I had a 93 4cyl, which i had done some somewhat extensive suspension work with a few other things. It was slow, but man was it ever fun on some mountain roads :) That's how I wrecked it.. i let it hang out a bit too much, and i rolled it! :( This 88 Stang is also a 4cyl, but it already has some very sweet mods, including an 8.8 3.73 Track-loc rear end with 98 cobra axles, SN95 front a-arms, 01 V6 brakes, 00 V6 rims, and several other things I forgot at the moment. This 88 will be reciving a heavily modded and rebuilt engine from an 87 or 88 Thunderbird Turbocoupe, and will be running at about 20 to 22 lbs of boost when i'm done with it. It will be a 4cyl, but it will definately be able to take some stock 5.0s. I can't wait to get to work! :)
