What to do after I open the box?

I expect to receive my first notebook PC (HP NC8430) sometime today. Assuming that the unit is not DOA, I'll have a lot to do with it right away (uninstalling Norton and installing my own AV, upgrading the hard drive to NTFS, updating the OS, getting wireless comms working, installing software, etc.) So I'll have a long initial session with the thing ... probably late into the evening ... and will definitely need it to be on A/C power for much or most of that time.

What I am wondering is what I should do about the notebook battery right off? Will it come mostly or fully charged? If so, should I run it down first before plugging the A/C power in, or can I just plug the A/C power in right away in preparation for the long session and not worry about it?

Any opinions or insights are appreciated.

Unfortunately I can't claim to be an expert of this, but from the research I've done there is one common thing about Li-Ion batteries: more cycles reduces the life of the battery. It should come mostly charged and I would say just plug it in and go. Running it all the way down will do nothing (to my knowledge) besides reset the "digital fuel gauge" so to speak (so that the OS has a more accurate estimate on remaining battery life) and just increase the number of cycles on the battery.

My $0.02
