Ask him, as a starting question (and I know this sounds weird), what kinds of things he has a passion for.

Invite him to go do some things (that are non demanding from him conversation-wise) with you and your friends. Casual stuff where he can just hang out and watch, jump in where he feels like it, and get comfortable.

Just bring up stupid topics just to show that he can talk to you with anything. Chances are he just doesn't know what to say, but if you start showing that any topic is ok, then perhaps he'll open up. And if you're going out with friends, take him too. Show him ATOT too, that way maybe you guys can get something in common,

He's prolly just shy, I suggest you dig a pit and place him in it. He will talk to you eventually and will warm up to you in no time at all.

Try seeing what he likes to do while he's on campus or in the dorm. Then start up a convo about that...:)

Watch gay porn, and watch it loud!

...maybe he thinks you're hot and is afraid to approach you...

Okay, there's my brain fart for the day.

I agree with the suggestions for beer, actually...but on a non-alcoholic side of things, he has to have hobbies, just find something in common.

So, beer is always good. If you can bring attractive women over, that'll help. I don't know that I'd ask him about his passions though...

I had a great idea, but it totally slipped my mind...

Good luck.

ever think maybe he doesn't like talking a lot (to you or others) and wants to be left alone?

If you can ever get him into the mall or something, sit next to him and don't say anything. Then jump up and scream:

"YOU TALK TO F---ING MUCH!"

and sit back down and be quiet.
