what to do about homicidal pilots?

Sure doesn't strike me as terribly "rare" if it happened within, what, 10 years or so of them implementing these controls?

As compared to what? The tens of thousands of pilots and millions of miles flown in that same period?

How about compared to the number of terrorist attacks on the cockpit that such a system has prevented?

I don't know how you are defining or counting "terrorist attacks." The system was designed to prevent intrusion into the cockpit, and I believe there have been far more intrusions and attempted intrusions over the last, say, thirty years than there have been cases of pilots deliberately crashing their aircraft.

Idea: allow the control tower to take control of any flight, by putting it on autopilot to the pre-determined destination, in emergency.

Concern would be hacking, which is why it should only be allowed to that one option for the setting forced.

fire all pilots and use robots.

the plane basically flies itself.

What about the suicidal insane programmer who decides to program all planes to meet at the same point in the sky?

The only thing hat needs to be done is when people realize they are dealing with an individual who is deranged..... do something about it then. There were people aware that James Holmes was insane. There were people who were aware of Adam Lanzas mental condition. There were also people aware that this co-pilot was not mentally stable.

There was no evidence that Adam Lanzas condition would lead to murder suicide. There would have been no reason to deny Adam Lanza guns even if his mother hadn't been the person who bought them.

My bad.... I had the mistaken notion that hiding away in ones room studying mass murders was normal behavior. I also was under the mistaken impression that Yale University medical experts who implored his mother to take care of his mental health were just quacks anyway.

Go be an idiot somewhere else please.

Seems like every week there is an incident and I keep hearing the same crap justification that it's still safer than a car. I'm in a car and I am in control over it each day. The fear of being in a environment where you have no control over the elements and x-variables ...gives me the hebee gebees.
