What to choose?
ASRock 775Dual-VSTA with Intel Core 2 Duo E6300...
or
ASRock 939DUAL-VSTA with AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+...

I've read the reviews about agp versus pci-e and ddr versus ddr 2 on the intel board and I've read simular things about the amd board... except the amd one can't use ddr2... but does have a full implimented agp 8x and pci-e x16...

So as is, either would give me what I need to upgrade to an intel or amd system cause I can reuse my existing ddr pc3200 ram, and my radeon 9700 pro AGP video card.

One thing is confusing me, see, my primary goal is to have a good gaming system that I can peck away at over a few months and upgrade my old video card to something newer either ati or nvidia.

As I see it a core 2 duo setup will cost mabe 50$ over the amd which is acceptable to me, but because of the video limitations on the pci-e running at 4x on the Core 2 Duo board versus the slower running AMD athlon x2 on the other board, which really is my best bet for gaming performance considering for the short term I would be reusing my radeon 9700 pro, and then upgrading to pci-e because nvidia and ati are ceasing production of new agp boards?

I think the E6300 is the no-brainer here.

I just checked prices at newegg.com and the E6300 is going for $180 shipped and the 939 socket X2 3800+ is going for $175 shipped. The ASRock Dual AMD board is $70 and the Dual Intel board is $56. So the X2 3800+/ASRock combo would actually be more expensive than the E6300/ASRock combo. It would be slower too.

A new PCI-E videocard running at 4x is still gonna run fast. I like the 775Dual-VSTA/C2D combo because it's fast and is gonna let me upgrade a piece at a time. My next step is DDR2 RAM and after that I will most likely get a new motherboard when I decide to throw down for a new high dollar videocard. But in the mean time C2D with DDR and an AGP X850XT ain't all that bad. :p

I use my old ATI AIW 9800 Pro 8x AGP card and 1GB DDR333 RAM in my 775Dual-VSTA with Core 2 Duo E6300 and it runs great dual booting XP and Vista RC1. I do plan to upgrade to 2GB DDR2 soon.
