Looking to replace my good ole GTX 970, it has served me well for the past 3 years but its now time to upgrade and pass this baby on to a new owner. I was wondering what are the Pros or Cons between the RTX 2060 and the GTX 1070 ti? No interested on Ray Tracing and it won't be used (Maybe just tested to see what is about but I don't care for it) Just overall performance is about the same in both cards. The RTX 2060 out performs the GTX 1070ti on some aspects and vice versa.

I can save a few dollars on the GTX 1070 ti, but which one should I really get? RTX 2060 drops Tuesday next week.

Looking forward to the input. Looking to buy one in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks

Well considering I paid $350 for my MSI GTX 970 3 years ago with 4gb (More like 3.5) I see that as a great upgrade, and honestly my GTX 970 has served me well, never has it disappointed me in any game I play. It runs Siege on Very High Settings between 60-110fps. Never did my GTX 970 seemed as not sufficient for my 1080p needs on any of the games I played. Honestly I am staying with 1080p as well not going to upgrade to 1440p anytime soon. So I really feel that the RTX 2060 is going to be a great upgrade.

I mean honestly, what's the games I play the most? Rust close to 1k hours (Runs great on my GTX 970 almost maxed) some Rainbow 6 Siege (Getting burnt out after 1k hours) Black Ops 4 (Love it)? Definitely could see some performance improvement in that with the RTX 2060. Modern Warfare 2? Modern Warfare 3? Black Ops 2? These are my favorite games I play the most (Love COD Sorry lol)

Secondary games are Diablo 3, Killing Floor 2, maybe some battlefield 3/4/1. Fallout 4, The Division 1 (Bought it on Christmas sale $6.50) Dark Souls 3? That's about all the games I play. I really think the RTX 2060 is more than enough for these titles at 1080p.

Sorry for the long reply, just enjoying the conversation, trying to explain my self and my position. I do play some League of Legends as well. How much more can I really need? And of course I probably have the option to get Battlefield 5 or Anthem when I get my card but not interested on either one will probably sell it on eBay.
970 has served you well that is great but it already shows its limitations in today's games due to the lack of vram. Amd provided 8gb during that time for around the same price. And many years later Nvidia is providing 6gb. Nvidia has gone backwards in that regard. 8gb card by amd in 2014 vs 6gb card by Nvidia in 2019.
Not to mention PS5 will likely have 16GB unified memory. You could go for 2060, its the best Nvidia card in the RTX series or alternatively you could try to see if you get some deal on Vega 56.

I wish, VEGA 56 is pretty expensive so far from what I've found honestly. Haven't had an AMD GPU since the 5870 on my Asus ROG, thing was bad A**.

Isn't AMD dropping a new Card soon? I think its VEGA II (2) right? and its supposed to compete with the 1080 or 2080 series I think? Wonder if they will drop anything in the range of 2060 and 2070?

Vega 56 is often on sale below $300. I have seen it hit $270 a couple times on various models. Radeon VII is the new high end replacement for V64/V56. It will be $700 for awhile I bet. It should be around 2080 speed. 64 is pretty close to 1080 speeds, that I can't really tell the two apart in game.

Navi should hopefully provide a low cost replacement for 56 and 64, but I honestly don't know.

There's also that rumored Nvidia card (1660 ti?) without RTX which may be priced very competetivly, but nobody knows for sure (well, except for JHH).

If you are at 60hz for 1080p, I would argue that all of these cards will feel overkill and will easily provide the same gaming performance if capped at 60fps. Whatever is cheapest is the best (as long as it has a good cooler).

Oh great explanation. Thanks. No I am 144hz 1080p not 60hz. I heard rumors of the 1660ti as well but nothing concrete yet.

Thanks

Yes its a legit site. Mostly rumors but they've got a better reputation now than a few years ago. I'd bet the 1660Ti goes for $275-300. 1660 version $225-250.

Oh alright awesome. Yeah those prices seem reasonable really. Gonna wait till next month see what comes up. Hopefully they make an RGB Model LMAO.

20% faster than GTX 1060 and GTX 1060 is 10% faster than a GTX 970 Wonder if its a good upgrade for my GTX 970 or just get an RTX 2060. Guess will wait and see.

yea it sucks to buy a card right now. there is no obvious choice other than a used 1080ti for what ever you can get it for under 500. I went ahead and upgraded my friends card to a 1070 for 200 with a windforce cooler used. If i was running a 144hz 1080 monitor i guess i would have to decide if i wanted to run close to the limit of the monitor or if 110fps would be good enough. (i want to check out a high fps monitor but its hard for me to use small monitor for all other use, Do you guys have the gaming LCD and a main display or just use a small monitor!)

I got a 1070 used for ~200 a few months ago and can upgrade with savings in a year or so when prices come down. gtx970 still go for ~100-125 so depreciation should be limited on 1070 if history is consistent

The RTX 2060 for sure. I like to diss on this card for many of its failings, but in terms of actual value for upgrading from older gpu's its great. For $350 you get 5% of GTX 1080 performance, free game and you are buying new so obviously a lengthy warranty and of course Nvidia focused on their Turing architecture to optimize their drivers for. (which is sad for Pascal owners) as we've seen drivers in the 400.xx series slowing down performance on Pascal and older cards.

I agree with everything you said. Just saw some benchamarks for the RTX 2060 compared to a GTX 1080 and its right up there with it on some test.

Just waiting till next month to get the model I want. RTX 2060 Aorus Extreme. That's the only model I want, or possibly the MSI Gaming Z which isn't available just yet either. Don't like all the other models. This is a big investment for me, and as stated above just need for 1080p so its more than enough. Ones I buy this GPU I probably won't upgrade for no less than 2 years possibly tops of 3 years before I upgrade again so I want to make sure I get the GPU I really Love in this case.

I would have pulled the the trigger on the ones by EVGA but none of them have a backplate so that's a pass from me which is too bad honestly, I Like EVGA brand.

Any thoughts on MSI nowadays?
I usually shop EVGA but not sure if i want to pay extra for the Ultra over the XC and with the XC not so sure about that single fan design in terms of thermals and noise.
Meanwhile, the MSI Ventus seems like a good deal but I not too sure about MSI build quality.

Only owned One MSI Product before and that's my GTX 970 and I haven't had any issues. Did an RMA for checkup (Was something else on the PC) RMA was simple as well. I like the Ventus but I don't dig the fact that the Logo is only White Paint not LED, that turned me off for that one. They do however have the MSI Gaming Z coming out supposedly next month and that one has more RGB/LED's on it.

Sure sounds really stupid to be worried about LED and RGB But I honestly like it, think it adds a nice touch to things, as long as its not in excess.

None of the EVGA RTX 2060's have Backplates so that's a Pass from me. Too bad they could have had my money.

Aesthetics are not an issue for me since all my PC's are tucked away. My main rig is 8 feet away from my desk under another table.

I have had a few MSI GPUs, usually of the 'bargain' variety (eg; cheaper models within a particular series such as a 970 etc). They all seemed to work fine, though unless your PC sits horizontally or you have some riser so that your GPU is horizontal, ABSOLUTELY do not buy a GPU of any size that has no backplate. My old MSI 970 eventually looked like someone stepped on the poor thing just from bending inside the case. It still worked, but I can't imagine it was far away from dying. It's honestly amazing it didn't buy the farm lol. I upgraded back to more premium stuff (EVGA FTW series, Asus ROG Strix, and Gigabyte Aorus), and they are DEFINITELY worth the premium over saving 20 bucks or 30 bucks or whatever.

On the subject of the 2060, ehh. I'd heavily suggest just holding out. It's an awful lot of money for a 6GB card. I just got a 1080ti Aorus 11GB for $400 a couple of months ago so that my older son could have my Asus ROG Strix 1080, and it is even better than a 2080. You have to examine the benchmarks carefully, when Nvidia send new releases, they always make sure the cards are benchmarked against the old, much slower OG FEs.

When 1060/1070/1080 came out, they had slower memory. The FEs had slow clock speeds. Later on, they upgraded to the 11GBPS models and the AIBs made much higher clock speeds. Thus my old Asus ROG Strix 1080 11GBPS was ~10-15% faster than OG 1080FE. Roundups show 2070 is a smidge faster than OG 1080FE, good AIB 11GBPS 1080s are faster than 2070. Extrapolating, that means a good 1080 AIB @ 8GB is well past the 2060, and the 6GB limit as well. Similarly, the 1080ti 11GB premium models are a step above the 2080s. Only the 2080ti so far is a sensible SKU, but holy crap is it expensive.

If you keep your eyes peeled on the FS/FT, you may be able to find a good 1070, 1080, or Vega card. Alternatively, you should at least wait until the 16xx mystery card appears. Another option is to perhaps scour your closets for random nonsense you can sell to add to your funds for a new GPU. A higher end model will serve you longer. Getting up to a 1080ti or 2080 would offer a huge step up indeed. Hell, at 1080p you might be able to stand pat until Navi. I do feel like RTX20xx is going to be a short lived product much like some of the old ones. It reminds me of FX5800, and of the 7800GT stuff. Placeholders before major upgrades.

I honestly feel like 1080ti is Overkill for 1080p. I saw a few FE 1080's (None ti) go for $400 but I don't like the FE edition. Also for $350/$400 the RTX 2060 performs almost on par to the GTX 1080 according to a Benchmark video I watched yesterday on Youtube.

But heck I"ll keep looking see if I can find a 1080ti for $400 I agree that would be a better and killer deal right there.

Good AIB 1080/11GB is 10-15% faster than 1080FE. Thus, if you look at used 1080s and find a good one (basically from the middle of 2017+), you are getting a respectably superior card compared to a 2070, let alone a 2060. 33% more VRAM, faster 3d performance.

I would say 1080ti is totally overkill for 1080p at present. But considering that you may want to keep this GPU for awhile, I'd actually say the more the better for a buyer at this time (2019). Next fall new consoles are releasing that will almost certainly have 16GB unified memory, and ~10+GB accessible to the games for video. HD textures, more complex models with more details and smaller textures, etc. You'll want all the VRAM and performance you can get so that say Rainbow Six Siege 2, AC:2021, whatever other AAA titles releasing over the next few years will still run good on your GPU.

I can speak from experience, I had a GTX 770 2GB at the time of PS4 launch. Great card at the time. Ran everything I wanted at 1080p at good details and performance. PS4 and X1 came out with 8GB unified memory, ~4.5-5.5GB for VRAM/game. Pretty soon the big AAA titles became more compromising to the 770 2GB. I've long since booted that card down to hand-me-down status, still works though (bless EVGA FTW lol, built like a brick shithouse). Nowdays, it can still do 1080p at fairly low settings in a lot of titles, but it really suffers from the poor memory limitations. I think 4GB and 6GB cards are about to go through a similar sequence.

That and if you want to buy a new monitor for whatever reason in the next few years, old one dies or is broken, whatever. You might find a deal on a 1440P ultrawide FS/GS, or whatever. 2060 6GB for 2020+ titles isn't even a sure thing for 1080p for very long, let alone 1440p+.

I understand. Just wanted to share these 2 videos.

Not making any point by sharing just sharing to have a comparison. I am open to any opinion. However for $350/$400 I am either buying a GTX 1080 or an RTX 2060. But I do agree it might be worth waiting on the new GTX 1160ti series see what comes out with that first. Coming from a GTX 970 I think RTX 2060 is an amazing upgrade. As mentioned above its only for the few games I play like BLack Ops 4, Rust, Rainbow 6 Siege, Fallout 76 and Modern Warfare 2/3 (LMAO I know) And Black OPs 3 (Big COD fan)

Heads up, guy in FS/FT has 8GB HBM2 Vega56@64 (a common and very successful mod) for $250. Might be worth a look. A good Vega is about equal to a good 1080AIB.

If you do go with a 1080, and I certainly think it's a good option, be absolutely sure to insist on the 11GB model. The dies are more mature and the memory is superior. I was getting within spitting distance of stock 1080ti with my Strix, and it was quiet and flawless. If it weren't for the steal on the Aorus Ti and the need for a good Christmas upgrade for my son I'd still be happily using mine.

Question I have an Asus VG248QE 144hz monitor wouldn't it affect it if I had an AMD GPU? I don't know the difference but like Freesync is AMD and Vsync is Nvidia or something like that right? Can't replace my monitor just to run AMD card sadly.

You will be perfect with it. The VG248QE is neither Freesync nor Gysnc, it just has a very high max refresh. Freesync and Gysnc are variable refresh rate. The Vega would certainly rock that 1080p@144 like nothing you've seen before.
