What to buy? cheap upgrade to athlon XP

Hey all,
I want to upgrade to an AthlonXP...I could use the faster CPU for gaming & for MATLAB work.

Anyhow...I'm wondering which model I should upgrade to? My motherboard is pretty no-frills (Biostar M7NCD), but I don't really plan on OCing anyway.

I figure if I could spend ~80 on CPU and 70-80 on 1GB of PC3200, I could give myself a solid speed boost...

So what do you guys think I should get? And when should I get it? I know that production of XPs has stopped, so I'm guessing prices will only go up...?

Thanks,
-Eric

P.S. I'm in college...don't have a buttload of money to spend so socket 939, as cool as that would be.

I can get a new barton 2800+ (333mhz fsb) for something like $80 on newegg. Is the XP-M 2500+ still a better idea than that for a similar price?

edit: and the Sempron is just an athlon XP with a different name isn't it?

If you're not overclocking, just get a 2800+ then. The mobile part is better for cooler operation or overclocking if that's what you want.

The Semprons have some differences between XPs. The socket A ones tend to perform a little worse than their XP counterparts of the same speed if I remember correctly. The socket 754 ones (like the one linked to above) are a great buy on a budget.

Yeah the socketA semprons are a bit slower--their PR ratings got inflated even more than the XPs, and I think they run half the cache. It's still an XP core (barton or tbred, I forgot).

If I go with the XP option, should I buy ASAP? Or if I wait till the summer (another month for me), will prices go down (on the CPU that is...I'm almost 100% sure RAM will, lol)
