What To Buy? A Gaming Laptop That's Not Too Big?

I have a friend looking to plunk down some cash on a laptop, but he wants to keep it small for classes while still being powerful enough for gaming. Cost isn't really an issue, but it needs to be under(or at) 5.5lbs loaded, and ideally using a screen below 15" to keep it portable. The problem seems to be finding a laptop with good graphics support, as there aren't many machines that don't use integrated graphics/TurboCache/HyperMemory of some sort. He's looking at the Sony Vaio S360(64MB MR9700) right now, but does anyone know of any better choices?

The Asus W3V is a 14" widescreen with 64MB X600 graphics (basically PCI-E version of MR 9700)

I don't know of any <15" machines that use >X600 graphics, but an X700 would be ideal and is the most poweful card they use in the thin & light notebooks. I believe the update to the S360, the S460, uses an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 128MB; that might be worth looking into.

Humm, the S460 Sony lists uses a Go6200, but with TC. Is the X700 going to be put in thin notebooks any time soon? This is a purchase that won't be happening for another month at this rate.

get the ASUS W3V. It uses hypermemory so if you get more ram your vid card gets more ram. I'm running 2x512mb and my vid card lists 256mb of ram.

But much better than the sony he linked. The Msi max ram is two gb where the sony is one. The mis has 128vram and the sony has 64mb. there are more but i wont' go on.

No doubt it's far better, but the guy I'm trying to find a laptop for was pretty clear on wanting it under 5.5lbs, so I doubt he'll go for this one. Thanks for the recommendation though.🙂

I know over many miles that 1lb will add up but come on. would you let 1lb be a deal breaker on a much better lappy???
