This person rarely uses a web browser or apps, they just want a very solid, reliable phone. She currently has an older android phone that has had constant problems.. It's very slow/laggy, needs wiped once every 2-3 months, and crashes all the time even with nothing installed.

Nokia Lumia 710. It's a Windows phone. It's very fast, responsive, simple, and no maintenance. My girlfriend absolutely loves her Windows phone and refuses to even touch Android now.

Another vote for the Lumia 710.

I am using one right now, and it simply works. No muss and no fuss. For @$349 retail, it is a very nice smartphone. You can find new ones in unopened boxes on Craigslist for $150-200. I still have my 1st gen Galaxy S running ICS as a backup in case I have an itch to go back to Android (which hasn't happened yet).

If she uses any Android apps/games at all, make sure that they (or something equivalent) are avail on the Windows Marketplace before switching over.

My 2 tmobile phones are both ready for upgrades. I have a SGS and a SGS2 and I was looking at the 710. Nice but I wanna wait and see what tmo has in store in the next couple of months. wish they had the 900 but eh, we'll see.

I don't actually own the Lumia 710 but I would recommend it.
I've messed with it and its a snappy, no nonsense phone.
Plus it comes in white which girls love.
