What time of wine would you recommend to a wine newbie?

I'd like to start incorporating wine into my diet, and my fiance could definitely use a glass before bed to help him sleep better.

What recommendations would you suggest for wine newbies with a tight budget?

Of the limited wines I've tried, I do prefer red over white.

Will either do for my fiance, who I think might need it to help him sleep better at night? I think he has mild insomnia, and hopefully the wine will warm him up and help him fall asleep.

More intense sex is the solution.

I'm more of a sweeter white wine drinker, so take that into consideration.

My current "bargain" wine is Chateau St. Michelle Riesling. Since it's a riesling, it's a lot sweeter than most white wines. But the C.St.M is not as sweet as most other rieslings.

I can pick this up at Costco for around $5 a bottle.

Fetzer also makes decent wines for the price. Sam's club carries quite a few different types by them for anywhere from $4 a bottle to $8 a bottle.

Best thing to do is hit a wine tasting party a local wine shop and see what types of wine you like. Then ask somebody at the shop for recommendations on that type of wine in a specific price range.

I can think of another way to relax him......

....but I digress. :D :p

What's your budget for wine? Give me an idea what you're after and I can make a few recommendations for you. Any store worth their salt should have a "wine guy" who can help you make decisions as well based on your budget, tastes, and what you're having for dinner that night.

Chateau St. Michelle also makes a great inexpensive merlot (although it's harder to find than the riesling).

It depends. Different wines were better in different years. :p

A 7'o clock wine is definitely best. The 6'o clock wine is too spicy, while the 8'o clock wine is too bold.

Go to Costco and pick up the Perrin Reserve Cotes du Rhone, dig down and see if you can find the 2000, the 2001 is fine but the 2000 is better. It's about $8 a bottle and is extremely good for that price. It's a very drinkable wine, good with most anything, but exceptional with grilled meats.

I'd say a Merlot or a chardonnay. Definitely NOT a bordeaux, as wine n00b, you'd probably spit it right out. It takes time to appreciate it.

Traqder Joes definately has some decent wines for the price.
Personally I like the Meridian Vineyards just cause uncle has a house right behind their vineyards and gets a TON of their wine for practically nothing :)
