Looks like a great way to ship a hard drive, right?

Well, Seagate demands you to ship your BROKEN hard drive to them like that.. Why can't you ship back your old hard drive the way they shipped it to you?.... And why the heck didn't they ship my 'working' one with that care? I bet my broken one wouldn't be broke if they shipped it like that..

Are you joking me Seagate!?

Oh yeah.. here is the catcher, if you don't ship it like that, they will not honor your warranty.. and the only way I know of to get all the packing stuff to guarantee my warranty to be valid is to buy the packing material from them for $24...

Not only has their crappy hd died on me after 2 months.. but they want to suck more money out of me to buy packing material>!?!?

What have you'll done about this? I do not want Seagate to try to rip me off anymore...

That's because a lot of HDs that get RMA'd turn out not to be broken, so they use them as warranty replacements.

When I had to RMA a hard drive to Seagate, I happened to need another drive... so I purchased it, and used its packaging to send back the RMA.

I had to to do the same for IBM... I think it's because they want to verify that the drive is dead and don't want potentially working ones to die while being transported.

umm.. all hdd manufacturers do it like that. I had to do that for a maxtor drive and a WD drive.

I have never seen shipping material like this.

Why do they want me to ship back their item better than it was shipped to me is my question.

So you shipped it back in seagate's retail box?

they said I have to ship it back like:
http://www.seagate.com/support/service/pdf/pack.pdf
or my warrenty will be void..

If I can ship it back how they shipped it, Iwill be happy

I've never had a problem shipping it back as they shipped it (the manufacturer, not from a retailer since I've seen some pretty bad packing). I've reused IBMs for WD, WD for Seagate, etc.

Don't b!tch about it, it's standard for any HDD manufacturer. Be glad Seagate is the only one offering a 5 yr warranty on them.

I shipped it back in their retail box - which, at the time, was composed of a box, filled with prefab foam, that held a clamshell, that held the hard drive. Which is the exact requirements of their return shipping, I believe.

I have a few month old seagate that let out a few clicks the other day.. I'm kind of concerned. I've always had great reliability with them in the past.

Basically, if you ship it to them in the retail packaging, they will have no choice but to honor the warranty. Otherwise, you take them to small claims court, and it would be funny to watch something along these lines:

SG: "Your honor, the plaintiff did not package the drive properly for shipping, and the warranty is not being honored."
You: "I shipped it the same way you ship it to your customers in the retail chain. Are you saying that your policy is to knowingly improperly package your products when you deliver them to all retail customers? That sounds like a good basis for a class-action lawsuit."
SG: "Errrr....wellll......ummmmm...... "

I'm pretty sure all the instructions from Seagate state that you can use the original packaging the drive came in or what Seagate deems to be acceptible packing as outlined in that document. I have shipped drives to them using the original packaging without any problems.

Well, I just called them up, saying>...

So you want me to ship the BROKEN product back with better protection, than I received a working one?!

And they were like.. we have an advance replacement system (I was thinking.. yeah I have heard this and you want me to pay 24$ for this..) but at the end, he said he will wave the cost as a one time fee :)

Yeah!!!

I mean, if they were going to do this to any avg joe, it would be good to do it with me.. I own 3 seagates (2x200 for raid1, and 1 160gig)

I am so happy now :)

lol. I received packaging material like that when I RMAed a Maxtor once. I just shipped back my hard drive in the same packaging material that it came in.

I couldn't begin to count how much Seagate-approved foam packing stuff we have kicking around at work.
We even have some of the 40-drive packaging cartons :D

I had a brand new Seagate (ST3200826AS) 200 GB hdd fail on my 2 weeks after purchase. Luckly, I simply had to take it back to where I bought it and got a replacement.
