What the...? KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Windows 2000 Pro sevice pack 2 will not boot. I get a BSOD that says Stop KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Then it dumps physical memory to disk.
I won't boot in Safe Mode either, same BSOD. The most recent change I made was changing my CD-RW mode from PIO to UDMA. I rebooted so that change would take place, and now I can't boot up. Doh!

I don't know if that's the problem or not. Anyone that can help would be appreciated. TIA.

Can't you just turn it back to PIO mode to see if the problem goes away?

I would gladly change it back, but it won't boot, even into Safe Mode. So I can't get in and change it back. I tried some of the other boot options like Last Known Good configuration, VGA mode, etc., but they all do the same BSOD and error message.

I wonder if there is a way to get into the console mode and edit the registry AND someone knows the proper line to edit to put back PIO mode on my secondary IDE channel. Anyone?

did you try setting it to pio mode in the bios? kmode_exceptions are usually driver issues so that should alter the drivers enough for you to at least get back in.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that when I get home. I'm at work (doh!). Everything was working soooooo great too. I'll probably end up formating the c: drive. I can just feel it.

If setting the drive to pio in the bios doesn't help, physically uninstalling the drive would certainly do (just unplug the ide cable). That should give you a chance to change it's config.

You'd think so, but it didn't work. I changed the BIOS and I unplugged the IDE cable to the drive, and the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error remains. I've tried booting off of the Win2k CD and doing the Repair procedures, but that doesn't seem to do anything either. I think I'm going to have to boot from the win2k CD, backup my Outlook Express files and my ICQ files, and kiss this installation goodbye.

Apparently the PIO vs. UDMA setting is not the problem. Because I *know* the secondary port supports UDMA, even if my new Lite-On 16x10x40 doesn't (and oddly, according to the BIOS it doesn't). With it unplugged, everything should have come up roses if that was in fact the problem.

Oh well. Here's my chance to do that win98se/win2k/linux multi-boot project that I've never quite pulled off before. Anyone want to come over and help? I'll buy you a Pepsi. Bah bah bah bah bah, bah bah bah bahhhhhh... the joy of Pepsi!
