What the $#&K is blocking this website?!!

For a number of weeks now I've been having trouble loading certain websites.
http://www.ronpaulforums.com/ being one of them.
When I click on the link I get the little "system notification" popping sound that winxp makes and the page does not load. This happens in both explorer & firefox.
I've uninstalled my firewall, turned off windows firewall and disabled any firefox browser plugins that might be blocking it and still my results are the same
This is driving me nuts and not helping the part of me that is naturally paranoid.
What the freak could possibly be blocking this website?!!:|!!

what other websites are being blocked? Have you tried doing a antivirus scan or malware scan to see if your system is infected?

Must be something amiss with your system. I accessed the site immediately using your link.

I've been having trouble accessing www. microcenter. com on my machine.

If I punch in that name, it says "connecting..." on the tab on IE7, and never connects or displays a page.

But if I do "ping www.microcenter.com", it resolves to an IP address, and if I punch that IP into the browser, it comes up immediately.

I haven't had any other DNS-related issues, so I don't think it's my DNS.

Strangest thing I've ever seen.

Try going through a proxy server. My favorite is Megaproxy...

http://www.megaproxy.com/ (Megaproxy | Try our free proxy service)

I use their *free* (limited) service as a diagnostic tool.

If you can access these sites using a proxy server, you know the problem exists on your local machine, LAN, WAN, et cetera... 😉

If you use a shared DNS server, you'll have problems, guaranteed. Sooo, I wouldn't be so quick to rule it out!

For instance, I used to have an ISP that only updated their zone files once a month. Hello?!?!?!

My current ISP's DNS service sucks too! I can't tell you how many times I've had sporadic connection problems - and fixed it immediately by switching to an open DNS server - 100's of times over the past 7 years. The problem is, open DNS servers are spotty too, because everyone is playing the shell game - vying for the same resource(s), looking for a dependable (and fast) DNS server. I'm always on the hunt for something better...

On this netbook, I'm currently using:

  • 4.2.2.1 for my primary (open DNS server)
162.42.150.47 for my secondary (my ISP)
On other machines on my LAN (and my gateway router) I specify other DNS servers. NONE of them are perfect!

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd run my own DNS server (again). LoL! But, it's easier to just hunt around for an open DNS server that works (for a while).

In my experience, ALL shared DNS services have issues, from time-to-time. It's par for the course...

If it were bad DNS, then why does the ping command pull up the DNS info right away?
OMG!

I'm NOT saying the server is DOWN... so, of course it will ping...

LoL! N/M

Some of you are missing something. When I attempt to load the link windows make the little system notification sound. This tells me that it's being blocked by software. Sure I can load it through a proxy but that doesn't fix the problem. I uninstalled my firewall and turned off windows firewall so theoretically nothing is being blocked. I'm running malwarebytes and avg and both come up with a clean system.

What makes this such a bazaar problem is that I can't figure out what software would be doing the blocking.

ACtually, the ping doesn't go through, probably because their web server is blocking pings.
But the ping command is doing a successful DNS lookup. So why can't the web browser?

Anyways, the problem is fixed. I rebooted.

Is this XP? Are you familiar with microsoft's network monitor? Sometimes it helps to see what is actually leaving the PC.

Yes Xp. I installed network monitor and recorded the event but I'm not sure what to make of it.

Email it to me. I am no expert... but I do this quite a bit where I work.
