Never in my life have I owned any one of those computers you listed. Sorry, better luck next time.

I have PAID FOR CDs for all my Windows OS and programs. I installed them all myself.

Think I found out why those font symbols ended up in my notes. I had my profile set to use an enhanced Anendtech note window. Hopfully I turned that crappy thing off.

Alright, I'm going to state my "opinion." I used WinME for about six months, and it was utter and complete HELL!!!! I did everything right all along. Only installed software that was suitable for my OS, had anti-virus, installed all updates/patches for my OS and Software. And in that six months, I HAD to reinstall 4 times. That's a B!tch when you HAVE to install for no reason at all. It sucked, wouldn't run anything. Oh good god, Blue Screens AT LEAST twice a day, and it froze all the time!!! (Don't ask me why I stuck with it for six months. Looking back, I think I'm pretty stupid.)

It was UTTER CRAP to me. I hated it. Upgraded to XP, and am happy. I didn't want much, just an OS that wouldn't crash, or give me BSOD's. And in 8 months, no major problems with XP at all.

Anywayz, yeah, that's my story.

Moral: WinME Blows Goat Balls

I really can't say for sure because I upgraded video cards (TnT2 ultra to AIW 8500DV) just about the same time I installed XP. Having said that, games performed poorly in Me after the vid card upgrade, but I saw a huge performance boost in games in 2000. Basically what I did was I installed XP on a spare HDD to see if performance was up to snuff. I liked XP so much that i re-formatted my Me partition because I couldn't get it to work with my new card properly, and have never looked back. For myself at least, Me was better than '98 (I never got the chance to use '98SE). XP pro is now my OS of choice. It is a memeory hog, but I have found ways around that. But as far as '98 vs. Me, there is no comparison, games were faster and looked better in Me than in '98.

You aren't going to get perfection from any operating system, much less Windows ME. IMO, Windows 98 Second Edition was the best of the 9x bunch.

And John,please don't try to defend the indefensable. Perhaps you have a very simple machine, and that is why you might not have any conflicts , but the fact that the 9x and Me OS's are prone to memory leaks means that the longer you keep it on and the more programs you open and close, the worse your experience will be.


Oh yea...and Me's secuirty is a joke......At my university..a fairly large one, basically everyone's computer with was destroyed by a few Me-targeted viruses...

I know for sure that at leat 500-1000 students got hit.

The Univ basically bought XP for everyone FOR THAT REASON..we had 2kpro but you know how it goes...


AND PLEASE don't tell criticize the Univ IT department..they are freakin' excellent.


BY the way, in semi-critical desktops, all they use is 2k.....nether the 9x variteis or XP varieties are good enough yet....

ME is bad news. I helped BETA Test ME ans it sucked from day one and the sucking sound just got louder as things went on.
I don't even know why MS beta tests anyway, they did not listen to anybody unless it was a 100% show stopper.
We damn near BEGGED them to not let it go out the way it was.

I also was STUPID ENOUGH to get ME to put on my system. 98 ran fine, but NOOOO I had to fall for the hype and get ME.

Lets see....

upgrade mode - will not install and locks up computer.

ReImaged and tried again, ..... Ooh, this time ME installed - within 2 hours, it locked up and couldn't get into it at all - "safe mode" , nothing.

Reimmaged again (should have kicked myself and the disk across the room then). Did it all again, latest drivers(again) - it lasted 2 days.

REFORMATTED - clean install and stable for a week. After the 4th crash in 3 days, I..........

THREW THE DISK OUT (after cutting it into VERY small pieces, so noone would have the misfortune), and reinstalled my 98 backup.

5 other people that I know went through almost the same route(2 home builts and 3 bought - Dells) they aren't running ME no more.

My wife's company (not for profit) won't touch a ME installed machine (donated) - I reformat and install something that actually works for them (98SE). They don't need, and I don't need the frustration.

ME is, and was a piece of junk software - put out too soon, with not enough though or forthought in it's design. A great quick money grab though (and I think that that was it's greatest feature for MS).
