Pop goes through cycles. The 80s were in the "boring white guy" portion of the cycle. Fresh air rarely gets blown into pop.

80s were the last time I ever listed to pop. I suppose that's the last time I considered it good. Not sure if it had anything to do with boring white guys though. I consider the 80s pretty unique because many (most) genre's had some great music.

WAT?

Here's just a couple of non "boring white guy" acts that you may have heard of:

RunDMC - Breakthrough group that made HipHop "popular"
Madonna - Basically created the "slut-star" image
Whitney Houston - Recreated the black female diva superstar image (from Donna Summer)

Not to mention the creation of MTV - which although it may be irrelevant now, changed the music industry forever in the 80s.

Plus, the late 80s spawned the entire class of Grunge music.

The 80s was fantastic for music.

peter gabriel was actually in genesis

Yup, and he had monumental success with his "So" album in the 80's. Sledgehammer was on a continuous loop on mtv.

I saw that tour and he was pretty damn incredible in concert.
I do prefer Gabriel era Genesis over Collins, by a very wide margin

Videos and media penetration means artists have to be packaged products now. In the 80s fame was largely on merit though the music industry did control the playing field. Now with autotune and makeup anyone can sound like Ariana Grande Latte with skim millk.

The 80s had such a wide variety of quality music. That was killed during the 1990s. And now a new nobody shows up yearly with the same sound, same song, same look that will be forgotten within 2-3 years to never be heard from again.

I wonder if any of these artist would do well on The Voice or American Idol.

Could you see Robert Palmer on The Voice?

It's funny hearing the love-fest over 80's music. Has it been so long that we've come around to liking 80's culture again? Guessing most of you are 40+ years old? I bet you're all Kiss fans too.

Not in my 40s yet. But came of age listening to music about 1984-85. At the time didnt appreciate the music due to my age. And after witnessing what has happened to music starting in the early to mid 1990s. I have definitely come full circle to love the 80s again. Very unique time period for music.

I think the 80s were an awesome period for music. You had all types of music. Also, this is when MTV came out and they actually showed music videos. And for all day!

Popular music today sucks. Beaver, Cyrus, etc...

All blow.

Steve Windwood was a star in the sixties-lead singer of Traffic, part of Blind Faith. In the eighties he (like Steve Miller & Boz Scaggs) to one extent or the other cashed in on current trends and did embarrassing but very popular music.

He had so many great videos too. As did Genesis with Phil Collins.

I'm guilty as charged.
