What the hell is wrong

I just recieved my SLK-947U and Panaflo L1A. I am running a 2500+ barton OCed to 200x11 (3000+). With the stock AMD cooling i was idling around 56C...with my High End thermalright im still idling 57C, and its only been on for 10mins!!. I dont know what is wrong. PLZ help!!

The only thing i did change was i used Thermalrights thermal compound instead of my cheap-o anted reference compound 🙁 . Im guessing that was a big no no, and i applied it very very thin. I took a paper and scraped it until it was covering the die, yet was still completely flat. I did the same for the HS. Did i do this wrong?? Could it be that im using the cheapo sh!t?

I am definately debating going out somewhere and buying Antec Arctic Siilver 5. Would that make a big difference?

Thx

-Kevin
Edit: Made title HSF instead of Just Fan

only thing I can think of is make sure the heatsink is seated properly and I would get some AC5 as well.

Situation just got worse. It turns out that i was underclocked at 1750 mhz right then. Well i went ahead an OCed it to 3000+ no boot... all i get is BSOD. So i tried the lowest OC i could... 1mhz increase in FSB... nope. I dont know what the hell is going on :-( :-( . Someone help !!

can you try cleaning it an putting it back on making sure the compound you use is in a thin layer? Also make sure that the HS is flat and in the correct position...good luck....

Confirm that the stepped end of the heatsink is oriented to match the raised end of the CPU socket, like this photo. Also, if you put a shim between the CPU and the heatsink, take it out.

I don't think a HS that i use the mounting holes for has a backwards. I will check but read which HS i am using. Was not supposed to put on the padded feat.

ALso about the OCing.... i cleaned my cpu with hydrogen peroxide (rubbing alcohal i guess). I took a Q-tip got it wet and get the excess thermal paste off. I remember somewhere that this was ok. BUt my doubt still exists, was doing that OK.

It could, I have an alpha pal 8045 and it uses the mounting holes on the motherboard, and it CAN be installed backwards, it never hurts to check.

Peroxide isn't alcohol. You should use as high a % denatured alcohol possible to clean the core and heatsink base.

If that "cheap-o anted reference compound" was ANTEC Reference Silver Thermal Compound, for some reason I'm remembering that an employee from Arctic Silver claimed they manufactered the stuff for Antec. So that stuff might be AS2 or AS3, if my memory serves me right (and that's a fairly big if).

In any case, you're not making a fair comparison. I'll bet you dollars to donunts, that your current setup is much quieter than your old one. Slap a more powerful fan on the Thermalright and your temps will probably drop. And you do have the Panaflo blowing down on the HS, right?

Yes i have the fan blowing down on the HS. However, i took the HS off and looked at it. The thermal paste that w as sent with the HS like eploded all over the place. So i got a Q-tip (dry) and cleaned it up. I looked at the HS and there doesn't seem to be a wrong way to put it on. So I will try it with my antec compound. Also how thin of a layer am i talking here. I took a piece of paper and scraped it so it was even and very thin.

Now im using the Antec Stuff. SO FAR after about 5mins running im idling at 52C. My ambient room temp is around 80F or i think 30C. So am i doing OK now. Also as for the OCing.... DO NOT USE THE THERMALRIGHT THERMAL PASTE. To say the least it exploded and leaked all over my CPU bridges. I guess the silver in there connected a couple and badabing... no OCing. But now i am idling at 52C at 3000+ speeds. So i dropped a little. I would be willing to bet that if i used AS5 then i would be idling around 46C. I dunno is my ambient room temp holding me back.

Make sure you don't put too much thermal paste on because that's just as bad as no paste. Just spread some on the bottom of the HSF and rub it in until the base is slightly discolored. Then put a rice-sized portion on the actual core and spread it on evenly. You should get some decent temps.

I did that. I am idling now at 58C. And it goes to like 64C under load. I guess its just my ambient temp.

Prolly...Your ambient is a little high and Asus boards read higher than most.
Remember also, the fan you are using is a LOW speed quiet fan. Putting on an H1A or a U1A wil drop your temps quite a bit. Personally I wouldn't be really comfortavble with readings of 64C.
