Can someone shed some light on this? It was cute the first 6 months I saw this. Are people so dumb that this actually works to sell more groceries? Gee this one is $2.25 but these are 2 for $5.00, I'll go with these. Has there been actual proof that people are so retarded that this kind of advertising works?

i like bargains!

I think the proof is in the fact that they keep doing it and people keep piling their shopping carts with three or four times the amounts that they originally intended to buy.

I'm guilty with certain products.

A basement freezer stocked with Totino's party pizzas isn't a bad idea for drunken munchy emergencies.

Ditto. But even if they put "50 for $50", you KNOW some jackass would walk out with a cart full of whatever it is.

People always fall for that crap. The stupidest ones buy more than they really need thinking that hey need to buy a certain number to get the sale price (though, there are a few cases where they do need to buy a certain amount to get the sale price).

If it's something that I'm definitely going to use quickly or won't go bad, I'll definitely buy it. For example, Gatorade. As far as getting the sale price whether you buy 1 or 10, it depends on your state. In certain states, they have to give you the sale price per unit as the single unit price (IE Buy 10 for $10 = $1 per unit vs. $2 single unit price). In others, you only get the deal when you buy the 10.

Although the example you have in the OP (brand shopping) applies only if the brand doesn't make a difference. For example, I don't care if crap cream cheese is $0.10 a bar. I only buy fresh from the bakery or Philadelphia cream cheese.

If in your OP you actually mean the product retailing for $2 and 2 of them cost $5, I've never seen that in my life.

I work in a grocery store. Yes, it does make some people buy more. Believe it or not, when an item is Buy One Get One Free, there are a decent amount of people who ask if they have to get 2 in order for the sale.

I was under the impression that you wouldn't get one item for half-price in a BOGOF?

I'm not really sure what kind of crappy grovery store you shop at, but at mine when they have 2 for deals it's usually something like 2 for $5, when the original price was $3 each or something like that. Yes, you spend more NOW, but knowing full well that in a few days I'd need another gallon of OJ for instance, I'm willing to shell out another $2 now to save $1 over the course of the week.

I've actually had to explain to some of my friends that you don't have to buy all five if it says 5 for $5. They're not stupid people either; I think they're just too lazy to take a closer look at the tag.

Thats because it would be illegal. Read "10 for $10" as a $1 price tag.

I really think that varies by state. I know I've heard about it on news sites before (the legality issue) and I know it's not the case in NY (it being illegal).

There are times when it makes sense. Sometimes they have the sale on the larger packages.

ie soap. I was in a store with a friend and saw the single pack was $2 and the 5 pack, normally $9, was $5. I only needed one bar at the time but got the 5 pack. My friend said I was an idiot, but I knew for a fact that 1 bar of soap wasn't going to last me the rest of my life.

disclaimer: numbers were made up, but follow the spirit of the situation

Good point.

My theory why it works:

PEOPLE ARE RETARDED! (I follow the movie Idiocracy's viewpoint here)
At my local store people will see a 10 for 10 deal on something that is normally $1(give or take 5cents) and go crazy for it.
This is why I always read the little tags to see the original price, PLUS know what the piece of crap I'm buying is worth.

cuz it works. mark something $1 and people might buy 1. mark it 10 for 10 and people are likely to buy more.

Its usualy 2.85 for 1 or 2 for $5.00. It would never be lesser for 1 than it would be for 2. Thats why it works. People like to "save" the $.70.
