I pose the question only because I have a pack of cherry fruit snacks that is equal to 2.5 servings. I mean what the hell. Am I supposed to spend 2.5 days eating this damn thing.

the size of a serving is set by the FDA or some govt authority. manufactorers make the package and then calculate the nutrition info.

Exactly. Serving size is given as 12 pieces, but I want to eat the whole bag. I have no problem with it, but why not make the packages equivalent to 1 serving (of the daily recommended value)?

Actually I think sometimes the manufacturer manipulates the serving size (or so I suppose). Like if they make something 2.5 servings they can say it only has 10 grams of sugar per serving instead of 25 and people think "oh, 10g sugar isn't bad" or even more importantly for calories for people who watch what they eat. At least that's how manufacturers could manipulate it if they were allowed to set the serving size.

To make the actual (lack of) nutritional value deceptive. Say snack is 2 servings and contains 10 grams of fat and 190 calories. Well, everyone knows 99% of people eat the whole bag which is 20 grams of fat and 380 calories. Which sounds better? ;)

Or sue the manufacturer because eating eating Big Booty gave them one (duh!).

<christopher lloyd> Big Boo-TAY ! </christopher lloyd>

But yes it's the manufacturers that do this so they can say "x calories" or "y grams of fat." The FDA has been forcing manufacturers to clean up their act and be more realistic but apparently not for all products yet.

Same as those 20oz soda bottles - I think they list a serving as 8oz. Mhmm...
It's deceptive advertising, but there's not really a good way of countering it. The companies could reply:
'9 out of 10 people we questioned said they drink about 8oz of the bottle.'
Of course, they may have interviewed 100 people, but they just need to exclude those other 90 from the final "9 out of 10" statement. Or something like that...

Who in their right mind decided that a serving of ice cream is 1/2 of a cup!

The same people that want to make you think that ice cream is healthy.

Everything in moderation though. One good part about being larger than average (not fat, just a bit bigger) is that I require 3100 calories or so. Everything is expanded a little bit for me ;)

Because a bag of chips with one serving would have what, 6 chips?

Just like those big cookies with all the pink frosting. Those are like 4 servings....

Why the hell would you open an individually wrapped cookie and only eat 1/4 of it??
