What the hell is the deal with text messaging?

I see all these fucking kids with their cell phones always text messaging people. It takes 2 minutes to call someone, but people insist on text messaging somebody 100 times to ask a question.

I just hate it how these fucking people can't go 2 feet without having their cell phone on them, because they might get a text message. Honestly, what do people actually have to say other than "HAY SUP?? LO!LL!!" I would say that a good 90% of text messages have absolutely no meaning to them.

I asked a few people why the text so much, and they say that it's "more convenient." or "It's easier to say things over text message." How is it easier? It takes you 30 minutes to ask somebody what they're doing today, when you could spend 90 seconds asking them.

Another thing, when you're trying to make conversation, and their cell phone goes off (usually some dumb fucking teen bopper song) they jump towards it like it's going to fly off if they don't pick it up in 2 seconds.

Right after that, the conversation ends, because they're to busy texting about how their day has been going, or some other fucking thing.

I can understand why they made it. For instance, person A was in a meeting, had to tell person B that they are going to be late.

That is all.

I'm just saying that people could reduce their time pushing their thumbs on buttons, if they just called them.

So you're saying you hate texting because some people like to use them? This is the equivalent to "damn all those kids and their skateboards!"

You know how long it takes to text "Hey, lets meet *insert place here* at 8"? I know for a text message inept person like yourself it must take years but it takes me all of 10 seconds.

mosh is right - it's a novelty. I have seen teens sitting 2 feet apart texting each other.

And from what I'm seeing with our interns at work, this texting thing is crippling their interpersonal skills. Can't write coherently, can't represent themselves well in meetings. One of my coworkers asked me the other day if I agreed that Allison (an intern) was so much more well-spoken and a better writer than the other interns. I agreed, and he pointed out of all the interns she was the only one who grew up out in the boonies. His theory is that she didn't have a cell phone, texting, or high-speed internet before going to college and that is why she has better interpersonal skills.

Cell phones are both the greatest and worst invention in recent history.

I hear ya brother- AMEN! It seems like the new generation is downgrading everything and enjoying it: music quality sucks due to MP3's and they eat 'em up, texting slows communication 10 fold and they see it as the way to go, quality TV and movies are being replaced by 2 minute video clips of a guy lighting his farts or squashing his sack...the world is going to be a scary place when these kids take over.

For the most part I agree with you, but I text pretty often myself. Sometimes it is in fact more convenient to say some things through text messaging rather than on the phone.

I only use it to send quick messages, and if I don't feel like calling. Only takes a few seconds to type a message anyway as I don't send a long-ass message. Also makes it nice in bars or other loud places where it would be more difficult to talk.

My wife cant talk on her cell phone while she's teaching. If I need to tell her / ask her something quick, I just send her a text message.

In general, I hate cell phones other than the techie part of them.

I love text messaging. Sometimes I just don't want to talk to people but I still need to communicate with them. I'm more drawn to texting though because my phone has a qwerty keyboard.

A lot of my family and friends initially complained that they can't get a response from me unless they text but now they all text.

Plus, my unlimited text message plan is by far cheaper than going over my minutes. I don't pay for them, but it's still a good idea to keep the cell bill down so work doesn't complain.
